January/February Issue of Eucalyptus Magazine Now Available

Los Gatos, CA (PRWEB) December 28, 2011
Eucalyptus magazine, the only lifestyle magazine that focuses exclusively on health, wellness and green living in the San Francisco Bay Area, has just released its January/February 2012 issue. Feature stories include pieces on healthy eating on the go, education issues and Type 2 diabetes. The Food department explains the macrobiotic diet. The Green Tips section gives suggestions on making the household environment cleaner and greener. The new issue of Eucalyptus is now online at http://www.eucalyptusmagazine.com/JanFeb12 and available from over 350 Bay Area merchants.
I hope that the articles in Eucalyptus Magazine will help you to feel happy, inspired, and satisfied in 2012. My sincere wish is that our magazine will spark new energy for you and lead to positive changes in your life, said Michaela Marek, publisher and founder of Eucalyptus.
One feature story on quick and healthy eating profiles four South Bay eateries that prove fast food doesnt have to be junk food. LYFE Kitchen in Palo Alto is the brainchild of a former president and COO of McDonalds who saw a great need to make fast-and-healthy options available. The popular eatery, which bans butter, cream and high-fructose corn syrup, brings the efficiency of fast food together with green ideas like locally sourced ingredients, LED lighting, and recycled furniture. Aqui Cal-Mex, a fusion restaurant with multiple South Bay locations, uses many organic and non-GMO ingredients, and reduces waste with recyclable to-go containers and biodegradable utensils. The piece also profiles Plutos, a favorite among picky eaters for salads and sandwiches, and The Loving Hut, the worlds fastest-growing vegan chain.
Another feature article on educational deficiency sheds light on the struggle many California kids have with reading and writing. Growing class size, underfunding, and the teach to the test mentality are some of the reasons literacy rates are in stagnant. The piece explores the important role parents emphasis on reading plays in their kids literacy levels, and discusses whether computers in the classroom are more helpful or harmful.
The new issue also tackles the rising rate of Type 2 diabetes, a serious but avoidable condition that has become alarmingly commonplace. The diseases health effects, which may include high blood pressure, impaired vision, and heart disease, are strongly associated with another epidemic, obesity. The article explores measures taken by local health professionals to get patients more involved in the treatment and prevention of Type 2 diabetes. Dieticians teach patients to eat more vegetables and lean protein and eliminate empty carbs. Screenings are offered to at-risk groups to catch it early. Regular exercise and stress management are also key to managing diabetes.
The Food department explores the benefits of macrobiotic eating, a diet founded in Japan that starts with base of complex carbs and vegetables and adds limited amounts of fish, fruit and nuts. Adherers view the macrobiotic lifestyle as more than a diet; its also a mental and spiritual path that emphasizes the search for balance.
As people spend more time indoors during the winter, the Green Tips section focuses on making the home healthier. Choosing furniture made with solid reclaimed wood, paints and stains with low- or no-VOCs, and candles made from beeswax or soy will improve the ambiance and clean up the air. Green Tips also air on two radio stations: MIX 106.5 and 94.5 KBAY.

As Holiday Season Draws to a Close, Stress Remains a Factor
(PRWEB) December 22, 2011
The holidays are typically a time of joy and celebration, but they also come with challenges and frustrations. Financial burdens, job stress and family pressures create feelings of helplessness and frustration that can become overwhelming. Anti-anxiety drugs often carry harmful or even dangerous side effects making their use a poor solution and could lead to additional problems. Natural anxiety medication may be less harmful but often dont bring the much needed relief.
Seredyn is different. By combining the properties of traditional natural remedies proven effective in double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, Seredyn provides an anxiety medication to people wishing to have the best of both natural and medical science. Seredyn uses natural herbs for anxiety relief specifically selected for their safe efficacy, such as l-theanie, which increases the activity of the neurotransmitter called GABA. Seredyn also helps the brain to calm itself instead of forcing a chemical into it that masks the symptoms like many anxiety medications.
Seredyns ingredients are designed to work with your brain and to help it release its own natural compounds to relieve stress, and lower your bodys tension and anxiety. It has few if any side effects and your mind finds peace. Natural remedies for anxiety like Valerian extract have been used for hundreds of years as an anti-anxiety medication. This particular extract has been clinically tested and has shown to relieve anxiety related insomnia by interacting with another neurotransmitter named Adenosine. Adenosine acts as a chemical messenger to tell the brain to regulate arousal and lower overstimulation. Through the use of this natural ingredient Seredyn is able to help the body activate its own calming mechanism.
A third natural extract found in Seredyn is Passion Flower. Again Seredyn uses natural herbs for anxiety relief that has centuries of use with positive results. Passion Flower, when combined in a special formulation with our other ingredients have been shown to decrease negative, anxiety related symptoms of withdrawal from alcohol, opiates, and certain anti-anxiety prescription drugs. The inclusion of this herb within Seredyns proprietary blend has made a difference in people trying to diminish their dependence on alcohol and anti-anxiety drugs.
Seredyn manufacturing facility adheres to stringent Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) guidelines to ensure that the blending and manufacturing process maintains its consistency of purity and potency. When taken as directed, these ingredients have been proven to be safe and effective in helping those suffering from everyday stresses through the use of natural remedies for anxiety. While many anti-anxiety drugs can cause side effects, have negative stigmas associated with them and can be habit forming, Seredyns use of herbs for anxiety and the all-natural supplements holistic approach to reducing the anxiety related symptoms makes it the preferred natural method for relief.
Learn more about how Seredyns natural remedies for anxiety can help you overcome your stress, reduce dependence on alcohol and bring more than just peace of mind. Seredyn helps you get your life back. Go to Seredyns website for more information, ingredient list and to find out all the benefits of Seredyn.

Bring a Friend & Get Free Boot Camp Workouts at a Local Chicago Gym
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) December 28, 2011
The annual New Years Resolution survey conducted by FC Organizational Products LLC found that the top four resolutions were: to become more physically fit, to improve ones financial condition, to improve health, and to lose weight. This year, Chi-Town Boot Camps makes it easy to join a Chicago personal training gym with their referral bonuses. Boot camp program participants receive a free month of boot camp for every friend, family member, or colleague they refer.
I want people to be so excited about the results they see at our Chicago gym that they become our walking, talking billboards, explains Boot Camp Owner Craig Kastning. I dont mind giving away the program for free to people who are serious about achieving their fitness goals, he adds. After all, my mission is to get Chicago off Mens Health Magazines fattest cities list, so I need as many people on board as possible.
The fitness boot camp program is the most popular offering at the Chi-Towns Boot Camp Chicago gym because it melts off pounds of fat, replacing it with lean muscle mass, with noticeable results within a month. The most dramatic results usually come after three or four months sticking with the nutrition and exercise program, when people lose 25 to 45 pounds. Some boot camp participants have dedicated a year of their lives to fitness and lost an astounding 100 pounds!
The Chicago gym features a challenging workout, but participants admit that it is surprisingly fun. In addition to jump-squats, lunges and push-ups, theyre also balancing on Bosu balls, running through obstacle courses, and using hula-hoops. The hour-long fitness program fluctuates between periods of high intensity, followed by periods of recovery a technique known as interval training, which studies show is most effective at fat burning.
Chi-Town Boot Camps Chicago weight loss gym also has a certified nutritionist on staff. This professional meets with all new members to discuss goal-setting and outline a fully customized monthly meal plan that emphasizes whole grains, lean protein, fruit and vegetables, and low-fat dairy. Individuals with gluten, diabetes or cardiovascular concerns are encouraged to ask the nutritionist any questions they may have about managing their conditions.
Chi-Town Boot Camps are located on Arlington Heights Road in Arlington Heights, on
Breast Reduction Can Save Lives and Reduce Risk of Breast Cancer
Marina Del Rey, CA (PRWEB) December 23, 2011
Women with overly large breasts, or macromastia, have an increased risk of breast cancer, says Dr. Grant Stevens, a renowned board-certified plastic surgeon and breast reduction surgeon at Marina Plastic Surgery Associates. The reason is not clear, he says, but it may be linked to obesity, where breast cancer rates are statistically higher, or a delayed diagnosis of breast cancer, which is more common in large-breasted women.
According to People magazine, comedian Wanda Sykes underwent breast cancer surgery in August after cancer was discovered as a result of her breast reduction surgery earlier this year.
During a September episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Sykes told DeGeneres that when breast tissue that had been removed during her surgery was routinely sent to the laboratory, ductal carcinoma in situ was detected.
“We have been carefully watching the literature over the years linking macromastia to breast cancer,” Dr. Stevens said. “In addition to the obvious problems big breasts bring, such as back strain, bra straps cutting into the shoulders and difficulty exercising, cancer is seen more often in women with large breasts. Ms. Sykes experience is a classic example of the difficulty in diagnosing cancer in large-breasted women.”
Dr. Stevens did not treat Ms. Sykes, but he has had experience with similar cases.
“In addition, we find that women with large breasts are also very self-conscious about them. We have done many breasts reductions, and the women are overwhelmingly thrilled with the freedom of a smaller breast size,” Dr. Stevens says.
The risk of breast cancer should be a reason for large-breasted women to consider reduction surgery, said Dr. Stevens, founder of Marina Plastic Surgery.
“There have been multiple studies to compare breast cancer rates after breast reduction surgery. Statistics do show a decrease in breast cancer incidence in the breast reduction group,” Dr. Stevens says. “Certainly, there are other risk factors for breast cancer, so we support an all-out assault on the disease by looking for all factors.”

Mesothelioma Victims Center Now Offers Customized Treatment Options & Names the Best Mesothelioma Attorneys for Navy Veterans or Individuals Dealing With Mesothelioma

(PRWEB) December 28, 2011
The Mesothelioma Victims Center says, “We will provide a US Navy Veteran, an individual, or a family dealing with a mesothelioma diagnosis with a personalized mesothelioma cancer treatment options report, that details the very best oncologists, or medical practice groups, that specialize in the treatment of mesothelioma, along with their contacts, in the specific area, or region of the victim of mesothelioma.” In addition the Mesothelioma Victims Center is the only group in the United States that will identify the most capable, and successful mesothelioma attorneys, or mesothelioma trial law firms in the nation, and provide specific contacts. No other group in the nation offers services like these. The group will also try to help a US Navy Veteran, an individual, or a family dealing with mesothelioma to get vital instant information about how to deal with, and or how to try to live with mesothelioma. No other group in the United States offers anything close to this level, or quality of service. For more information US Navy Veterans, individuals, or families dealing with mesothelioma are encouraged to contact the Mesothelioma Victims Center anytime at 866-714-6466, or they can contact group via their web site at http://MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.Com
Why does the Mesothelioma Victims Center mention US Navy Veterans so frequently in it’s press releases? The group says, “This year, nearly 3000 US citizens will be diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called mesothelioma. Of this group, about one third will be US Navy Veterans.” The Mesothelioma Victims Center says, “Our goal is to be the premier advocate for all US mesothelioma victims, we offer more comprehensive free services than any other group, or organization, and our goal is to see to it that no family has to start from scratch, after learning about a mesothelioma diagnosis.” http://MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.Com
Aside from US Navy Veterans, other high risk groups for mesothelioma cancer include shipyard, power plant, or oil refinery workers, plumbers, electricians, county, or city municipal water district workers, miners, demolition construction contractors, railroad workers, or auto brake technicians. The Mesothelioma Victims Center says, “We are becoming increasingly worried about retired electricians, plumbers and especially city or county water works employees, and mesothelioma. If these individuals were working in the 1950′s, 1960′s, 1970′s, or even 1980′s, they were probably exposed to enormous levels of asbestos on their job sites. City or county water works employees could have been exposed to asbestos pipes up until the early 1990′s.” They say, “One thing we really want families to understand is mesothelioma cancer does not typically show up until the Navy Veteran or US citizen is in their 60′s, and more often than not their 70′s, or 80′s. Frequently mesothelioma is diagnosed three, four, or even five decades after the exposure to asbestos.” http://MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.Com

Cancer Patients Report Easier Recovery, Inner Strength and Renewed Optimism from ‘Inner Engineering’ Yoga and Meditation Program

Isha Foundation- McMinnville, TN (PRWEB) December 25, 2011
Inspired by eager participation in its scholarship program for breast cancer survivors, Isha Foundation is extending its patient scholarships into 2012 and expanding it to include individuals who are recovering from cancer of any kind. The first Isha program to offer the new Cancer Survivors Scholarship is Be, Breathe, Blossom Technologies for Wellbeing, a 3-day Inner Engineering Program offering simple, but powerful yogic methods to bring about a deep state of meditativeness. This program will be offered by Isha Foundation founder, yogi and mystic, Sadhguru in Houston, Texas from May 4-6, 2012. (Venue TBA.) Cancer Survivors Scholarships offer recovering patients and cancer survivors a scholarship of $ 60 toward the 3-day Houston program fee. These scholarships can be obtained by e-mailing Houston(at)IshaFoundation(dot)org.
Cancer treatment can be very traumatic for patients and their families, both from a health perspective and an economic perspective, said Kalpana Rajdev, M.D., a family physician and President of Isha Foundation. We are thrilled that patients and survivors of cancer are able to benefit so much from these scholarships, empowering them to receive a potent internal support system during one of the most physically and emotionally challenging times in their lives. The meditative process they receive in these three days is with them for life, supporting both their recovery and maintenance of health.
According the American Cancer Society, twenty years of research on meditation indicates that meditative processes offer significant mental and physical benefits for those with cancer. Research shows that meditation can help reduce anxiety, stress, blood pressure, chronic pain, and insomnia, reports the ACS website. A 2008 study of those practicing Inner Engineerings primary meditative practice, Shambhavi Mahamudra, revealed an instantaneous response of nervous system function during just 21-minutes of practice. These results support a direct and immediate impact of Shambhavi in modulating the autonomic nervous systemthe involuntary aspect of the nervous system that is responsible for the stress-response.
Derived from the ancient yogic system, an elaborate system of inner technologies over 10,000 years old, Inner Engineering is a powerful program created by Sadhguru to instill a deep sense of inner balance, joy and mental clarity. According to Sadhguru, health benefits attained as a result of Inner Engineering are the by-product of overall balance achieved within the system. “In yoga, when we say ‘health,’ we don’t look at the body or the mind; we only look at the energy,” Sadhguru explained in a recent Huffington Post article. “If your energy body is in proper balance and in full flow, your physical body and mental body will be in perfect health.”
Many cancer patients who’ve taken Inner Engineering (IE) say that the program offered them a remarkable boost in emotional strength and a positive forward-looking perspective when they needed it the most.
“I have been through chemotherapy and radiation with all the side effects imaginable… I strongly feel that if I had not been doing the (Isha) practices, I would not have had this inner strength to deal with my situation the way I have,” explained Chitra Karnani of Bloomfield, MI. “I still have some challenges left to be dealt with, but I remain mentally and emotionally strong and feel capable to cope with whatever comes my way.”
Margie Hudnell of Dayton, Ohio felt that the Inner Engineering program helped markedly reduce the pain of her surgery and boost her recovery from treatment, as well.
“My recovery post-surgery was quite remarkable. Aside from the pain medicine provided in the recovery room following surgery, I did not have the need for further medication and my incision healed at least twice as quickly as normal as per my surgeon. I felt totally healed and so energetic that my family had to remind me to take it easy,” emphasized Margie. The traditional radiation and chemotherapies were discussed as was the Tamoxifen protocol, however I opted to not accept these recommendations pending my early diagnosis, clean margins from the lumpectomy, established yoga practice and inclusion of neem & turmeric (documented anti-cancer properties) into my vegetarian diet.
The medical team supported my decisions, being aware that my yoga practices and dietary regimen supported my immune system and natural healing of the body and having witnessed my remarkable postsurgical recovery. I attribute my continued 11 years cancer-free state directly to my Isha practice and the dietary recommendations provided as part of the program designed by Sadhguru.
Founded by Sadhguru 30 years ago, Isha Foundation is an international non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating human potential through the ancient yogic system. For more information about Isha Foundation, visit http://www.ishausa.org. For more information about Sadhguru visit http://www.Sadhguru.org. For more information about Be, Breathe, BlossomTechnologies for Inner Wellbeing coming to Houston this May 4-6, or to apply for a patient scholarship, contact houston(at)ishafoundation(dot)org
An introductory video of the Inner Engineering program can be viewed at http://www.InnerEngineering.com
A free Isha meditation process can be experienced at http://www.IshaKriya.com Isha Kriya in itself is a powerful ongoing support for internal balance. This process, however, cannot offer all the benefits made available through the 3-day Inner Engineering intensive with Sadhguru.

Colon Cancer Typical Features
On August 1, 2009, Corazon Aquino, former President of the Philippines, passed away at the age of 76. While the official cause of her death was cardiorespiratory arrest, it is known that Aquino suffered from advanced colon cancer. What is this form of cancer?
Every case of cancer is different and requires individual diagnosis and treatment. In addition to this, cancer occurring in any part of the body has unique characteristics. Cancer involving the terminal part of the large intestine, known as colon cancer, seldom occurs in persons below the age of 40. It is a serious form of cancer, and treatment should begin early.
In general, any persistent change in bowel habits should alert a person to the possibility that colon cancer, or a condition that may lead to it, may be present in his body. Some of the changes that may signal potential danger include the following conditions: constipation or diarrhea that may not go away after about five days to a week; a feeling of not being able to eliminate all the waste matter; rectal bleeding or blood in the feces; constant or frequent gas pains; and abdominal cramps.
None of the symptoms mentioned above definitely signals the presence of colon cancer. Still, each of those symptoms may indicate that something about the large intestine may have changed, and that the sooner the person finds out exactly what that change means, the better are the chances of his doctor dealing with it.
Almost seven decades ago, the five-year survival rate for colon cancer was only about twenty percent. Then the medical field waged a strong campaign to urge people to submit to periodic examinations in the hope that early detection and treatment of colon cancer would improve the chance of survival of a patient. That campaign achieved good results, as the five-year survival rate currently stands at about fifty percent.
The examination procedure to detect the presence of colon cancer involves these three steps: examination of the tissues surrounding the anus and inside the anal canal; examination of the inside of the colon using the sigmoidoscope (an endoscope, specifically a flexible fiberoptic probe); and X-ray examination of the colon, if the physician feels there is a need for this.
So far, the only successful method of treatment for colon cancer is radical removal of the affected tissues by surgery. In advanced colon cancer, the application of radiation (irradiation) or the use of chemical agents (chemotherapy) may be helpful.
Small growths which protrude from the lining of the colon are considered to be forerunners of colon cancer. Stools that are narrower than usual may indicate the presence of such growths. Otherwise, these are easily detected by the examination with the sigmoidoscope; they are readily removed and, therefore, can be used by a pathologist for examination.

Depending upon your individual situation, your allergist will recommend one, two or all three of the following treatments:
Depending upon your individual situation, your allergist will recommend one, two or all three of the following treatments:
1. MEDICATION: Using pharmaceuticals in various forms to block the symptoms of allergy. Although this does not do anything to eliminate the specific allergy causing those symptoms, it is at times a necessary part of treatment, especially in asthma or severe nasal allergy.
2. ALLERGEN AVOIDANCE: Eliminating or decreasing your exposure to the substances to which you are allergic. The less of the allergy-causing material you breathe in, the more comfortable you will be, and the less medication you will require (can’t complain about that).
3. IMMUNOTHERAPY (ALLERGY INJECTIONS): Injecting the actual substances to which you are allergic, in order to produce a degree of tolerance to them. The allergist at first injects very minute amounts of the allergens, and then very slowly and gradually increases the dose over time, thereby decreasing your degree of sensitivity.

3 Steps to Managing Skin Allergies
An effective approach to managing skin allergies has three components. Firstly you must understand the condition, then you must discover if anything is triggering your skin reaction, and thirdly you must look after your skin.
Many people think that allergies only affect the respiratory or digestive systems, but they can also affect your largest organ- your skin. As with other allergies the immune system overreacts to the presence of certain substances and releases inflammation-producing chemicals. Do some research and talk to your doctor. You can be confident of controlling your skin condition better if you are sure you understand what causes it.
The second component in managing a skin allergy is identifying then eliminating the allergens and irritants that start the itching/scratching cycle. There are over three thousand known triggers for skin allergies. Many are natural, but there are plenty of man-made ones too.
A common man-made trigger is latex, which comes from the sap of the Brazilian rubber tree. The natural proteins and those added in the manufacturing process can trigger an allergic reaction. Most people are aware that this can lead to reactions if you wear latex gloves. However latex is also present in baby pacifiers, balloons, pencil erasers and elastic bands in undergarments. There can also be problems when latex particles become airborne and are inhaled. If you have a latex allergy try to avoid the material and use vinyl or plastic where possible.
Nickel is another trigger. In addition to the obvious nickel-containing metallic objects like coins and jewelry, nickel is also present in everyday objects like scissors, bathroom and kitchen cabinet handles, and zippers. Mascara, eye shadow and eye pencils also contain nickel. Experts estimate that the number of people suffering from a nickel allergy has risen about 40% in the last decade. Much of this is believed to be due to the popularity of body piercing. Some foods also have natural nickel content and people who suffer severe symptoms may need to restrict their diet under medical supervision. At present there is no way to desensitize a person with a nickel allergy. Avoidance is the best strategy.
The third component of effective management is looking after your skin. The easiest thing to do is to keep your fingernails short to reduce the damage caused by scratching.
Managing your skin’s condition means firstly moisturizing and softening the skin to ensure it does not dry out. Your doctor may recommend you use topical corticosteroid preparations to control the inflammation.
When you take a bath soak in lukewarm water for 20 to 30 minutes. Do not have hot baths or showers, as the heat will increase skin dryness and itching. You can add oatmeal or baking soda to the bath for a soothing effect, though it does not help moisturize the skin.
Use a mild soap or a non-soap cleanser with neutral pH (pH7). If you wish to add bath oils do so after you have been in the water so that it can seal in the moisture. Do not use bubble baths as they can form a barrier that stops the bathwater moisturizing your skin.
After the bath dry yourself by patting your skin with a soft towel. This helps retain moisture. Immediately after drying your skin apply a lotion or emollient cream to help your skin retain the moisture.
To look after your skin you will also need to avoid situations where you will experience extreme physical contact, heavy perspiration, or heavy clothing. This may mean avoiding some sports. Swimming is permissible if you rinse the chlorine from your skin as soon as you leave the pool, and use a moisturizer after drying yourself.
Follow these three steps and you will be able to control your skin allergy and minimize its impact on your everyday life.
How to prevent excessive sweating
Sweating is as natural as breathing, one sweats when does extraneous physical activity or is exposed to hot weather. It is the natural reaction of human body to exertion, fear, stress, heat. It also is a symptom of nausea, obesity, menopause, puberty and nervousness.
The sweat is a fluid that contains water, urea, sodium chloride, lactate and minerals. The sweat glands in human bodies are responsible for the production of the sweat. Approximately each human body has 5 million sweat glands that are distributed all over the human body and in the skin.
Sweat is produced when the body heats up and wants to cool down under high temperatures or strenuous work. It is also a means of excretion of wastes in the body. As it can be seen that the sweat is not only water but has some solute in it too. It is very normal to sweat so there is nothing to worry about if you sweat normally. However excessive sweating is something that is to worry about and it needs to be controlled. You can take following measures to help your body sweat in a normal way to save yourself from the discomfort and embarrassment excessive sweating causes:
There can be many causes to excessive sweating; one can be the products you are using. You can use an antiperspirant instead of a simple deodorant to make your glands stop sweating. Check the product carefully and see if it only a deodorant or an antiperspirant too.
The color of the clothing is also important when it comes to excessive sweating. Go for light colors and loose fitting clothes so that you have better circulation of air inside your clothes and the light colors do not make the sweat marks all too obvious if you can not help but sweat.
If you sweat extensively, avoid wearing artificial fibers as they restrict airflow by sticking to the skin. Cotton is best to provide you ventilation so it can be worn as an inner layer of clothing if you have to wear silks or artificial fibers like polyester etc.
Purchase an antiperspirant that has aluminum chloride in it. It helps with sweat control as it blocks sweat pores and restricts its flow. The rumors that it causes breast cancer are baseless so do not worry about them.
Excessive sweating is although an issue but with the above mentioned points you can easily prevent and control them.

The Dreaded Word Menapause
When we start reaching forty we begin to wonder if those mood swings and fatigue are signs of the perils of menopause. There is a great deal of folklore about that often too dreaded word,”menopause”. Those who discuss menopause as the great’” change of life” many times indicate make up think we go to bed vital young women and wake up dried up spinsters. The one fact is for most women it is a long drawn out process that leaves them confused about when pre menopause becomes menopause and what symptoms they are experiencing are part of the process of entering this stage of life.
The amount of menopause symptoms will vary a great deal for women to women. Most women will experience hot flashes and night sweats. Most will not experience any really dramatic symptoms at all. Some of the effects are more of our own attitudes about our ageing reproduction system and not a result of the biological changes of menopause. That depression you experience; may be over your attitude and self confidence in your personal sex appeal It does not make the depression less real, just not really related to you physically ageing.
One common myth about menopause is that your post menopausal women are not as sharp in regard to memory as younger women. Some women do experience some memory loss during early menopause possibly related to hormone changes and the resulting depression. Most women find this situation temporary and their memory returns to normal after their body becomes more hormonally stable. Of course all of us become a little forgetful as we age. Serious and dramatic cognitive changes should be checked out by your doctor because you really can not pass them off as being a result of menopause and not a result of hormones.
Weight gain can be a real side effect of menopause. Dropping estrogen levels cause fat to be disturbed differently. Your internal fat burning engines slows as your metabolism slows down. Again, if the weight gain is dramatic and accompanied by dry skin or fatigue, you may need to have your thyroid checked. Women who use hormone replacement therapy many times experience less weight gain Still if you don’t do HRT that has its own inherent risks’; you can simply try to jump start your metabolism with a little more exercise.
Smoking can cause women to go into early menopause. Of course this is not true for all women smokers, but if you need another reason to quit here it is. If you quit before middle age you are less likely to go into early menopause. Early menopause puts women smokers at a greater risk for osteoporosis and heart disease. Smokers are at higher risks for these things on their own, anyway. Stopping smoking now will lower your overall risk for these conditions.
The age your grandmother or mother entered menopause can be a way to pinpoint of when you may go into menopause, but it is not full proof. Dietary and lifestyle changes in recent generations may change when you are going to enter the “change of life. ” There is a genetic connection, but when you start period is probably a better predictor rather you will enter menopause early or late. Women who start to menstruate young are more likely to take longer to enter menopause.
Lastly, some women believe their sex drive will lesson during menopause .Again, this probably is more an issue of self image than menopause. Many women have a greater sex drive during early menopause because of the increase testosterone to estrogen hormone levels. Some post menopausal women actually feel more sexually freed because of the loss of the fear of pregnancy.
There are many things you can do to make the menopausal process easier. Most of them are common sense like, right, rest, and get exercise. If mood swings become a big issue for you talk to your doctor. Wear light clothing to bed to make night sweats more bearable. You can try natural remedies or consider HRT if things become unbearable. HRT is a big decision because you may put yourself at risk for certain kinds of cancers that you would normally not be at great of risk for. You and your doctor are the best people to decide what is to be done when you feel menopause has taken control of your life.

Understanding And Coping With Children?s Allergies
Our well-being and state of health is determined by our physiological ability to adapt to our environment, what the scientific community calls our “total stress load.”
The ever-growing list of pollutants of the air, water, and land add to a long list of naturally-occurring allergens which constantly bombard our senses, forcing our adaptive mechanisms to adjust. And while many of us are able to make these physiological adjustments with relative ease, for others the adaptive process effectively weakens them, pushing their total stress load beyond the healthy tolerance level. The result, for a growing number of people, are allergies. And with over 12 million artificial chemicals presently in use in the US alone, and an estimated 1000 new toxins being introduced into our environment every month, the incidence and rise of allergies and respiratory problems among both adults and children is nothing short of alarming. And these chemicals are not just isolated to the air we breath–which is cause enough for serious concern–they are finding their way into our water, drinks, drugs and medications, cosmetics, textiles, and of course, our food. The food we feed our children.
The commonly-accepted definition of an allergy is a sensitivity to a substance that doesn’t ordinarily bother most people. Many scientists believe this definition needs to be amended to reflect the many commonly-used chemicals, foods, inhalants, and other environmental factors which are affecting larger and larger sectors of the population–not just select groups. An allergic reaction can involve the individual’s immune system, but non-immunological responses are also possible. And when children begin to display symptoms of allergies, it’s quite often impossible to immediately distinguish them from those of a common cold, flu, or hay fever. Children often suffer for months or even years while parents attempt to discern the source of their kid’s misery.
Children are exposed to potentially harmful environmental conditions every day–and in many cases, no amount of adaptation will save them from suffering. In the home (in the foods they eat, exposure to cigarette toxins, pet hair, dander, and molds, unclean water, household cleaning products, gas from carpeting, fumes from paint–not to mention the rising use of harmful chemicals in the yard and garden), in the school (asbestos in many old buildings, contaminated air-conditioning systems, lead paint, commercial disinfectants, and a whole assortment of cosmetics and personal grooming products), and of course, in the outside world (carbon monoxide, methane gas, fumes from motor oil and gasoline, paint, pesticides, herbicides, and thousands of other commonly-used toxins)–children pay the price. A price that can be debilitating for some kids. Allergies can go far beyond just the runny nose or sneezing spells, they can affect their breathing, skin, bowels, and even their cognitive and reasoning skills (their ability to think clearly).
While food allergies had long been thought of as simply a pre-disposed inability to tolerate a particular food (strawberries, for instance), science is now recognizing that many children are not just responding to an inherent pre-disposed intolerance, many are developing an intolerance due to the amount of pollutants a food may carry. While common foods such as corn (including corn syrup, corn starch, corn oil), eggs, fish (and fish oil), milk (including cheese and butter), nuts (especially peanuts and peanut butter), and wheat (found in most baked goods and cereals), are at the top of the intolerance list, a number of other common foods are being added due to the environmental conditions these foods are typically subjected to–including tomatoes, shellfish, celery, soy, and a number of other foods ordinarily considered quite healthy. Thus, while statistically, foods are the most common source of allergies in kids, it can be quite an ordeal to figure out which one–or ones–is the culprit. An ordeal that can be performed by the parent only through a strict process of trial and error elimination.
Allergists suggest that when a parent suspects that a food is the source of their kid’s symptoms, they begin with the list of commonly in-tolerated foods and remove them from the child’s diet one at a time, eliminating each for a period of 12 days, while watching for obvious signs of improvement. No improvement, feel free to replace that food, then target another. It’s important to remember that should milk be the suspected culprit, a parent must eliminate all milk products to properly screen: not just the obvious sources such as whole milk and cheese, but also its inclusion in countless products you may not even suspect contain milk. (Read labels.)
When the elimination process fails (and may have to be extended to environmental conditions in and around the home, school, and beyond), a parent must then consider identifying the source of the problem through an allergy identifying test administered by your doctor, or in some areas of the country, at your local clinic. But be certain to ask if your doctor or clinic is certified by the American Association of Clinical Immunology and Allergy. Also, a parent would be well-advised to independently research allergies to be certain of all the options (but seek reputable sources like the Mayo Clinic or John Hopkins Hospital–not Wikipedia). You will also find that there are a large number of natural curatives and homeopathic remedies that have proven very effective in many cases.
Colon Cancer
/Epidemiology
– Colorectal cancers are the leading cancers in both genders. They alone account for 15-20% of all cancers.
– Cancers of the colon account for 60% of colorectal cancers.
– The estimated incidence of colon cancer in France is about 34 000 new cases per year. In 20 years the incidence has increased by about 40%.
– Colon cancer reaches more particularly the population over 50 years with a prognosis of 5-year survival of only 55%
– The incidence of mortality from colon cancer in France is 18.5 per 100 000 inhabitants.
– Colon cancer is characterized by a slight male predominance with a sex ratio near 1.5.
The natural history of disease: Subjects at risk
1 – average risk patients
These are the topics within the general population, individuals with no family history of colon cancer or other cancers encouraging. In this population, the largest, colon cancer is rare before age 50 with a rapid increase with age, the average age of diagnosis was 69.5 years for men and 72.8 years for women.
2 – High-Risk Subjects
They are of different origins:
Subjects with one or more first degree relatives are diagnosed with colorectal cancer
Studies suggest that individuals with one or more first degree relatives diagnosed with colorectal cancer have a risk of suffering from this cancer doubled compared to the general population. It seems that the risk is especially increased as age of patient is low. The Consensus Conference recommended a screening colonoscopy in individuals with one parent was suffering from colorectal cancer before age 65. The discovery of polyps and their resection requires a test, after 3 years, if a period of 5 years is more than enough before the second check.
Subjects with a family history of colorectal adenoma
The presence of colorectal adenomas is a risk factor for colorectal cancer. The relative risk of parents and siblings of subjects with adenomas compared to the spouse is around 1.8. This risk is increased if the related subjects with adenomas are under the age of 60. A study in Côte d’suggests that the risk of colorectal cancer is related to the size of the adenoma: it is not different from that of controls in the first degree related subjects with adenomas less 1 cm in diameter, whereas it is multiplied by 2.1 in relatives of subjects with adenomas larger than 1 cm in diameter.
Subjects with a personal history of colorectal tumor
The risk of colorectal cancer is higher, multiplied by 3.6 in patients with an adenoma or villous structures of more than one centimeter in diameter and multiplied by 6.6 if the adenomas are multiple.
Subjects with inflammatory bowel disease
Inflammatory diseases of the colon are exposed to high risk of colon cancer.
- Ulcerative colitis : the risk of developing colorectal cancer is much more important in case of pancolitis that in case of limited left colon. It is not increased significantly in cases of proctitis.
- Crohn’s disease : some studies suggest that the risk of colorectal cancer is higher if Crohn’s disease was diagnosed before age 30 and was initially extended.
Other risk groups
Women with ovarian cancer or uterine cancer have a risk of colorectal cancer a bit higher than the general population. The colorectal cancer risk is multiplied by 2 only among women with breast cancer when it is diagnosed before age 45 and has at least 10 years of evolution.
3 – Subjects with high risk
These subjects are a group with two genetically determined diseases:
- syndrome of hereditary colorectal cancer without polyps or Lynch syndrome : this syndrome, the mutated genes belong to the family of genes involved in mismatch repair system of DNA.
- familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) : less than 1% of colorectal cancers are due to FAP.This disease is characterized by the development of hundreds of adenomatous polyps lining the intestinal mucosa.
Screening
Screening is based on risk level and type of population.
– Mass screening is for 12 million people in France without a risk factor for colorectal cancer and, because they are aged 50 or older, have an average risk of developing the disease.
– Only tests for occult blood in stools fit this mass screening, and among them, only the Hemoccult was seriously evaluated.
– The practice of large-scale biennial Hemoccult could reduce colorectal cancer mortality in the population subjected to screening 15 to 20% if the turnout is high during the first season (more 50%) and that these subjects continue to participate massively in successive campaigns, and virtually all subjects with a positive test had a colonoscopy.
Elements of diagnosis
1 – Colonoscopy
– Total colonoscopy is the ideal way of screening for colorectal cancer in patients at high risk.
– It’s the most effective endoscopic examination on the diagnosis. It is more a treatment technique in case of discovery of a polyp as it allows their removal. The malignant polyp represents only 5-6% of all adenomas removed.
– Colonoscopy requires preparation of good quality will be achieved through the use of PEG 4000 in various forms. The examination must be performed under anesthesia.
– A polyp becoming cancerous ten, it is assumed that all polyps should be removed
2 – Other screening techniques
– Rectal examination: is limited to tumors located in the last 10 cm of colon
– Sigmoidoscopy: to view the terminal portion of the colon which is home to three quarters of tumors
– Imagery currently under consideration for screening MRI, ultrasound scans
– Exploration radiological barium enema. The progress of a barium fluid is followed by fluoroscopy.
– Pathology: The most common histological type is adenocarcinoma lieberkumien (adenocarcinoma) typical or atypical (colloid mucous or anaplastic).
Prognostic factors
(From Standards, Options and Recommendations of the National Federation of Centres for Combating Cancer cons)
Knowledge of prognostic factors of cancers of the colon can specify the role of different treatments in the context of a multidisciplinary management.
1 – The standard prognostic factors
– Degree of invasion of colon cancer transparietal
– Invasion by contiguity to adjacent organs
– Lymph Nodes
– Importance of lymph node
– Presence or absence of metastases
2 – Other prognostic factors
– Factors related to patients gender, age, race, history of blood transfusion in the perioperative period, duration of symptoms before treatment, lifestyle
– Clinicopathologic characteristics of primary cancer: tumor site, revealed by acute intestinal obstruction, revealed by a perforation, macroscopic
– Factors postoperative pathology: histological differentiation, histological type, venous vascular invasion, lymph vascular invasion
– Determination of preoperative carcinoembryonic antigen
– Protein p53
– Studies of DNA and genetic markers

Womens Health Blogs Adventures In The Blogsphere.
Writing, as a form of therapy, is as old as ink itself. Universally understood as a transformative process, the simple act of putting pen to page can effectively jump start personal growth and healing.
Over the years I’ve had more than a handful of sessions on a therapist’s couch sorting through the baggage I’ve built, bought, borrowed and inherited in my 48 years. Without exception, each qualified practitioner proposed the following recommendation: start and keep a daily journal.
Seems much angst and worry can be worked through with pen and paper. Yet for reasons that can only be explained as part of ‘my personal charm,’ my journal keeping would start and lapse in record time. Nevertheless, I knew the writing process to be powerful despite my inability to be consistent. Once, after managing to hold my journaling nose to the grindstone for 13 weeks, I leapt tall buildings made of artist block and landed on the other side, with renewed energy and fabulous paid work.
And yet, despite my success, I quickly discontinued putting my thoughts on paper.
Miraculously, last spring, my lifelong writing inertia evaporated with the click of a computer button. As easy as one, two, three, I started my own on-line journal, more commonly known as a blog.
A blog is a web log comprised of a series of posts, about the author’s choice of subject, from professional to personal. Every entry is date and time stamped as they are published, giving the material the feel of a traditional diary.
Blog procedure is exceedingly simple and free for anyone with access to a computer. I type my thoughts, press the publish toggle and instantly my rants and raves go live on the World Wide Web. There is no middle person, web mistress, publisher or editor to be found. Blog control post, pace and frequency is in the blogger’s hands.
However, there is one distinct motivating difference between your traditional hard copy diary hidden away, under the bed, and your blog. Blogging offers a possible audience.
My first thought was to use a blog to share the unusual adventure of my Calendar Girl life and draw attention to the Breast of Canada project. It took no time to realize that a following of fans was a big buzz, injecting tremendous energy into the somewhat relentless process of making, marketing and moving 3000 calendars every year.
My second blog took on a digest format offering alternative breast related news that was a simple by-product of my role of publisher.
Blog number three was born thanks to a peri-menopausal fit of memory and hair loss. Fondly called ‘My Menopause Blog, How to Punctuate Life Without a Period,’ This effort truly fits the therapeutic writing model and contributes enormously to my state of mind.
Writing publicly about my petulant period, in real time, is like inviting a bunch of menopausal women over for tea and a heart-to-heart. Not surprising, scaling the dome of silence surrounding menopause, and talking above a whisper about ‘The Pause’ resonates deeply with women readers.
Shooting from the hip and funny bone, I share my findings of remedies, attitude shifts and my belief that menopause is not a disease. Thinking broadens with each entry; confidence grows as does understanding and a liberated sense of ageing. My Menopause Blog is like a cyber red tent for anyone interested in musing on maturity.
Eventually, curiosity lead to an on-line exploration of blog networks, blog rolls and search engines to see if other women were writing about their lives, health and well being.
Turns out, they are. Thousands of blogs are written by new moms, freshly divorced, empty nesters, the menopausal, survivors of cancer, stay at home parents, clinically depressed and chronically curious. Photos are up-loaded. Advice is sought. Human contact is collected by way of comments that reader’s leave like cyber hugs. There’s a whole lot of contact being made between people separated by geography, but connected by circumstance.
Clever blog names are common with blog owners. Ellie at This is My Body, This is My Blood offers a hilarious window into her peri-menopausal pity party. ‘I’m Out of Estrogen and It’s Not Pretty’ provides a window into Victoria’s menopausal life. A group blog that I randomly come across claims: “Running this blog is about 50,000 times cheaper than a good therapist.”
This new cyber kid on the block follows a blogger code of conduct that creates a safe, encouraging and friendly zone where you can let yourself hang out, be human and be heard. Not everyone writes like a professional, although there are excellent pro bloggers leading many a parade of readers. Countless circles of similarly focused, differently skilled people gather in and share the Blogosphere.
My greatest blogging benefit comes from my daily commitment to write just like the psychologists suggested. I clear my head, sort out my hormone-scattered feelings, get cheered on and remind myself that life is dynamic. Indeed, the cyber trail documentation of my menopausal mood swings is time stamped proof.

Iron Deficiency Induced Hair Loss
When you come to the conclusion that your hair density has changed, you start looking for reasons – anything that might be causing it.
There are many factors that can contribute to hair loss. One very common cause is low in iron. Iron is the mineral occurring in the greatest volume in the blood and its most important function in the human body is to assist in the production of both hemoglobin (the substance that carries oxygen within red blood cells) and myoglobin. Iron is also involved in the oxygenation of your body’s red blood cells. Iron deficiency sometimes triggers hair loss in large quantities but it can also be the cause of subtle, slow thinning over several months or even years.
It is understood that levels of iron play a significant role in various body functions, but it is also essential for sustaining normal growth and maintenance of hair. Low in Iron can possibly cause hair loss, is most common in pre-menopausal women between the ages of 35 and 50, when heavy menstruation contributes to iron loss. It should also be noted that iron-deficiency induced hair loss is not a condition exclusive to females. Males who by personal preference or religious reasons are vegetarian, habitually reveal depleted iron stores and/or low iron availability.
The simplest way to prevent iron-deficiency induced hair loss is to keep the balance of iron in the body adequate. Basically when the concentration of dietary iron absorbed by the body is inadequate, it results in negative iron imbalance.
Making sure that you get iron from natural sources is the best preventative measure to prevent iron-deficiency induced hair loss. Always make sure that you have a well rounded diet consisting of all essential nutrients and well as iron rich foods. There are plenty of great sources of natural iron in the food you eat. Be sure that you include several servings of a variety of the following foods in your diet everyday.
* Dried Fruit – especially figs, dried apricots, prunes, raisons, currants and dried peaches
* Leafy Green vegetables – such as dandelion greens, spinach, arugula, kale, mustard greens, Swiss chard and chicory.
* Beans and lentils
* Red meat
* Liver – both beef and chicken
* Oysters, Clams, Shrimp
* Chicken and turkey Fish – tuna, halibut
* Whole grains and brown rice Soybean flour
* Blackstrap Molasses Enriched cereals
Iron-deficiency induced hair loss is prevalent. However always bear in mind that not every hair loss is caused by iron–deficiency. If it turns out that you don’t actually have iron-deficiency, taking iron supplements could create an entirely new problem. In fact, it can be downright dangerous if you end up overloading your body with too much iron. So, to avoid the dangers caused by overdose of iron supplements you need to talk to your doctor and see if indeed you are suffering from iron deficiency induced hair loss.
Hair-loss can be divided into two categories: Hair-loss with skin shedding (also called “scaling”) and hair-loss without skin shedding. Hair-loss with skin shedding is likely related to a skin disorder.
Bone Density
Brittle bones and osteoporosis result from low bone density in older people, especially women in the menopausal stage as well as with people who are obese or have a sedentary lifestyle. Having low bone density can translate into weaker, brittle bones that easily break or as you age you begin to stoop because your bones don’t have the mass to support your frame especially if you are overweight.
Everyone as they grow older will eventually lose much of their bone density. But losing the mass of your bones can be slowed down. While still young, it is the best time to take preventive measures and a step towards keeping your bones healthy and strong all through out the days of your life.
Young children should have a diet with appropriate amount of calcium and perhaps even strontium (a mineral similar to calcium but more effective in building up of mineral bone density). Start in early childhood to take in food rich in both minerals for strong bones and consequently less prone to low bone density as they grow older.
Before the years catch up on you, make sure that you do have supplements to boost up your intake. Of course a healthy balanced diet and life style also contribute to prevention of osteoporosis. This means exercise, good sleeping habits and no smoking or drinking habits.
So if you think you are likely to develop osteoporosis, consult your family doctor for proper diagnosis and professional advice.
Though your family does not have a history of osteoporosis, being aware of what you can do now to prevent it is better than be confronted with it later when there is not much you can do once the disease is in advance stage.
And even if you are already graying you can still take supplements and train yourself to include whole grains, legumes, leafy and root vegetables, spices and seafood in your diet to help keep in check the loss of bone density. To slow down the aging process that affects your bone density you can also keep yourself agile and flexible by doing exercises that you enjoy doing.
Whatever your age, do what you can: as suggested eat fresh food that is not loaded with fat and empty calories and take supplements; do have proper sleep and rest and regular exercises. Stop any drinking or smoking habits, and take time to relax and de-stress. These will contribute to a healthier you and improve your bone density in the process.
