Making a beautiful smile, beaming all but from ear to ear, has become an admitted rite of passage for teenagers these days, as common as SATs and their first date. In fact dental health care for dental braces are now so normal that kids seldom get teased about wearing them and it’s seem as something that ‘just is’, during the teenage years. To ensure that one get the effects of dental health care that one needs with the dental braces, one have ongoing care of them to interpret cautiously.

Are Invisible Braces the Answer?

Although the new style of Invisalign braces for dental health care are much less busy kind of dental brace, it would not be true to say that they are the reply to all problems. They are less annoying in their almost invisibility, yet they still need to be taken care troubles of when utilized, with cleaning, care with food and other issues a trouble.

The ADA (AmericanDental Association) does not conceive that this pattern of dental brace is right for all troubles.

They also arrange for free dental care. Indeed they do not suggest they are utilized for children and when they are utilized, the best use is for minor work, typically where common dental braces would not needfully be utilized.

A good invention, Invisalign braces, a dental health care fill a corner in the dental braces market, but only a little one, particularly where the adult wearer actually has a good bite design and the issues are minor. So, traditional dental braces are still the item of option for most children and adults, whether they have a short or long term trouble with their teeth and mouth.

Dental Braces and Intimate Relationships

If one is sexually active and wear dental braces then aid must be taken particularly when French kissing or other relations that involve the mouth.

The metal in the braces could severely get in the way and where caring parts of the anatomy are involved, this might make the feel memorable for the wrong reasons.

No-one would like for dental braces to have a holding out impression such as injury, a sexually transmitted disease or even bigger an unwantedpregnancy to be the result. With a couple of simple precautions they fulfill a necessary role in managing the visual aspect of millions of people today, so they are worth the effort. In spite of the discomfort, numerous years experience has proven that the effort is worth it and a million-dollar smile is within touch for many more people these days than ever before.

Basic Dental Care – Infants and Children

A child’s dental care really starts with his or her mother’s healthy pregnancy, because baby teeth begin to form before birth. If you are pregnant, make sure to eat a balanced, nutritious diet and get an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals. It’s important for pregnant women to have a complete dental exam and have any cavities or gum disease treated. For more information, see the topic Pregnancy.

Teething:
Your child’s first teeth usually begin to break through the gums (erupt) at about 6 months of age, although the timing varies among children. All of the 20 primary teeth should come in between the ages of 6 months and 3 years. Your child will lose his or her primary teeth between the ages of 6 and 11.
Your child’s first permanent teeth (molars) usually erupt behind the primary teeth at about age 6. The last permanent teeth usually erupt between the ages of 12 and 21.

Starting dental care for children

By the time your child is 6 months of age, your doctor should assess the likelihood of your child having future dental problems. This may include a dental exam of the mother and her dental history, as the condition of her teeth can often predict her child’s teeth. If the doctor thinks your child will have dental problems, be sure your child sees a dentist by his or her first birthday or 6 months after the first primary teeth appear whichever comes first. After your first visit, schedule regular visits every 6 months or as your dentist recommends.

Experts recommend that your child’s dental care start at 12 months of age. Babies with dental problems caused by injury, disease, or a developmental problem should be seen by a children’s (pediatric) dentist right away. If these dental problems are not limited to the surfaces of the teeth, your baby should also be seen by a children’s doctor (pediatrician) or your family doctor.

Caring for your child’s teeth
It’s best to start good oral health habits before permanent teeth come in:

• Parents and caregivers often share spoons, forks, and other utensils with babies. The saliva you may leave on the utensil contains bacteria that can cause tooth decay. Sometimes, kissing can also transfer bacteria. You can help prevent early childhood tooth decay in your child by making sure that your family practices good dental health habits. Keeping your own teeth and gums healthy reduces the risk of transferring tooth decay bacteria to your child.
• Do not put your infant or small child to bed with a bottle of milk, formula, juice, or other product that contains sugar. The sugar and acids in these liquids can cause tooth decay (bottle mouth). Do not prop the bottle up in your baby’s mouth. Remove the bottle as soon as your baby is done feeding or is asleep. Breast-feeding your infant to sleep is safe, however. Encourage your baby to begin drinking from a cup at about 9 months of age.
• Discuss your child’s fluoride needs with your dentist if your local water supply does not contain enough fluoride. To find out, call your local water company or health department. If you have your own well, have your water checked to determine whether your family needs fluoride from other sources. You may also need to provide fluoride to your children if you use bottled water for cooking or drinking.
• Give your child nutritious foods to maintain healthy gums, develop strong teeth, and avoid tooth decay. These include whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. Try to avoid foods that are high in sugar and processed carbohydrates, such as pastries, pasta, and white bread. For more information, see the food guide pyramid.
• Do not give your child mouthwashes that contain alcohol. When they are around 6 years old, children with a lot of cavities may start using a mouthwash that contains fluoride. But watch that they do not swallow it.
• Keep your child away from cigarette smoke (secondhand smoke). Tobacco smoke may contribute to the development of tooth decay, gum disease, and other health issues.1 As your child grows, teach him or her about the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke.
• Children play hard, sometimes hard enough to knock out or break a tooth. Learn how to prevent injuries to teeth and what to do in a dental emergency. For more information, see the topic Mouth and Dental Injuries.
• If your child sucks his or her fingers or thumb, help your child to stop. If the child can’t stop, see your dentist. For more information, see the topic Thumb-Sucking.
Brushing and flossing
• Start cleaning your child’s teeth with a soft cloth or gauze pad as soon as the teeth come in. As more teeth erupt, clean teeth with a soft toothbrush, using only water for the first few months.
• By the time your baby is 1 year old, use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Brush your child’s teeth for the first few years, until your child can do it alone (usually at about age 3). Teach your child not to swallow the toothpaste.
• Your child can learn how to brush his or her own teeth at about 3 years of age. Children should be brushing their own teeth morning and night by age 4, although you should supervise and check for proper cleaning.
• Give your child a small, soft toothbrush, and apply fluoridated toothpaste in an amount about the size of a small green pea. Encourage your child to watch you and older siblings brush teeth. A good teaching method is to have your child brush in the morning and you brush at night until your child masters the skill.
• Start flossing your child’s teeth as soon as they touch each other. You may find plastic flossing tools helpful. Talk with your dentist about the right timing and technique to floss your child’s teeth and how to teach your child to floss.
• Use disclosing tablets from time to time to see whether any plaque is left on the teeth after brushing. Disclosing tablets are chewable and will color any plaque left on the teeth after the child brushes. You can buy these at most drugstores.

Periodontal Disease Affects Dogs and Cats

Your pet’s teeth are an important key to their overall health. Preventative dental care is an important part of taking care of your pet and good grooming habit. Dogs and cats live longer when their teeth are properly cared for.

Normally your pet may not be cooperative, if you are trying to brush their teeth. For dogs, chewy bones cab be an integral part of pets taking care of their own teeth cleaning. Dental wipes for dogs and cats are also a good alternative. If your pets teeth have tartar on them, a visit to the vet may be in order. The vet will be able to professionally clean your dog or cat’s teeth. The disadvantage to this is the vet must use anesthesia in order to effectively, safely, and thoroughly clean their teeth. This could be a costly endeavor, but may need to be done infrequently, as long as you keep up on brushing and wiping your pets teeth regularly. Preventing periodontal disease in the gums of your dogs and cats will help your pets overall health and well being. Proper petcare of your furry companion can help avoid a myriad of health problems that have their basis in untreated teeth and gums. There are simple and routine things you can do for your pet to help alleviate gum disease and tooth loss. Many pet owners are not aware that they can take preventative measures to avoid periodontal diseas in 85% of dogs and cats who are over 4 years old, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Plaque is the major cause of gum disease in dogs and cats, just as it is in people. It comes from the residue left on teeth from food and bacteria. Brushing removes this film of bacteria. If it is not removed by brushing, the plaque sets on the teeth, creating a yellow or brown matter called calculus or tartar. Left untreated, your pet may eventually lose their teeth.

Petcare Involves Good Grooming Habits

Does your dog’s or cat’s breath smell? Bad breath in your pet Is an early sign of periodontal disease. Gum disease does not happen overnight. It develops over time. Your veterinarian can do a proper dental examination to figure out how far the progression of periodontal disease has spread. Early on, gum disease, plaque and tartar form, which may cause inflammation. This redness, swelling, and irritation of forms along the gum lines and causes gingivitis. When gingivitis is caught early, it is most beneficial for your pet. Let your vet do a professional cleaning on your pets teeth at the veterinarian’s office and then you can follow up with regular petcare and routine cleanings at home.

If gingivitis is not caught early, the gum infection will progress further and cause bleeding from the gums, receding gums, tooth loss and loss of bone. The vet may have to do oral surgery to prevent further progression of the disease. Your vet will know how to properly clean the gums. Periodontal disease causes pockets of bacteria to form in the gums. These pockets need to be cleaned out to halt the continuation of the infection. Left untreated, periodontal disease continues to infect the gums and mouth, the bacteria continues to go deeper under the gum line, and can cause the gum tissue to pull away from the bone. Your veterinarian will clean out the bacteria and attempt to reattach the gum tissue to restore a healthier dental environment in your pets mouth and teeth. The inconvenience and expense will help avoid your dog or cat from losing their teeth unnecessarily. Preventative care will avoid tooth loss. The reason your dog or cat’s teeth may have to be removed is if they have been adversely affected by the bacteria from the periodontal disease. It may be necessary to remove the affected tooth because once those teeth are gone, the periodontal disease is gone. But these are extreme cases, and only done, when the gum disease has progressed further, and the vet has no other alternatives.

In extreme cases, the bacteria in your dog’s or cat’s mouth can seep into their bloodstream and cause more internal damage to organs like the heart, kidneys, joints and lungs. Many veterinarians have found older ailing dogs with kidneys that were failing and discovered that the bacteria in the kidneys was identical to the bacteria in the pets gums.

Signs and Symptoms

Take precautions and be aware of your pet’s oral care

Symptoms and Signs of Periodontal (Gum) Disease in Your Pet:

  · tartar
· bad breath
· drooling
· loose teeth
· receding gum line
· avoiding drinking cold water
· swollen gums
· bleeding gums
· not playing with chew toys
· changes in eating habits
· pawing at their mouth

Prevention is the best thing to stop the progression of gum disease in your pet’s mouth.

Let your veterinarian teach you how to take good care of your pet’s teeth with regular teeth cleaning habits.

Smile Wide: Your Pet’s Dental Examination

The veterinarian will examine your dog or cat’s mouth, remove the tartar from the teeth, above and below the gum line. If your vet finds that the gums are diseased, they may suggest to eliminate the bacteria by taking out the tissue that is affected to encourage improved dental health. Your vet will polish your pets teeth with a paste that is designed to remove the coating of plaque and residue. Anesthesia is usually used to for proper and thorough cleaning. Before your dog or cat gets anesthesia, the vet will make give your pet a check up to make sure they are healthy and strong enough to withstand the procedure.

Anesthesia has improved markedly through today’s technological developments, making it a safer and more pleasant event than ever before. Many anesthetic products have your pet alert, and back to their usual selves shortly after the dental procedure has been completed. It is a good idea to talk to your veterinarian to educate yourself on what they have to offer for your pets care and well being so that the procedure results in as pleasant and pain free a procedure as possible. When you feel confident that your pet is in good hands you will feel better about dental petcare for your dog or cat.

If you are researching the field of dental health, you can learn dental assisting from some of the best dental assistant schools in the US and Canada. Dental assistants are always in demand to teach preventive dental care, promote general oral health, and to assist dentists in the day-to-day routines of a dental practice.

Dental assistants have an important responsibility as they work side by side with dentists during patient exams and treatments. Professional dentists rely on dental assistants to maintain dental records, to prepare patients for dental treatments, and to keep everyone as comfortable as possible during dental procedures. Dental assistant schools are in the business of teaching both the clinical and administrative expertise expected of dental professionals.

Typically, dental assistant training will cover preparing trays of dental software, sterilization procedures, what is expected during oral surgeries and treatments, and how to instruct patients on postoperative oral health. The best dental assistant schools will teach you a variety of patient care duties, such as how to apply topical anesthetics, take dental x-rays, process x-ray film, use computer dental software programs, examine patients, remove sutures, prepare materials for dental impressions, discard hazardous materials, and much more.

A good school for dental assisting should cover human anatomy, dental terminology, preventive care, radiology, anesthesiology, nutrition, diseases, and pathology. Before you can become a certified dental assistant, you will be required to have a fair amount of practical experience in a dental clinic or dental office. In many cases, dental assistant schools will have an on-site dental office to provide students with the necessary hands-on experience.

Oftentimes, the dental assistant is required to do some of the medical office administration duties. At dental assistant school, you will become familiar with the proper procedures for scheduling appointments, keeping patient records, ordering and stocking materials and supplies, and processing insurance claims.

When researching quality schools for dental assisting, one thing to look for is that they are sanctioned by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Admission to dental assistant schools usually requires a high school diploma (or equivalent); a background in sciences and familiarity with computers are also considered to be a helpful starting point. Some dental assistant courses offer certificates or diplomas that will take about one year. You can obtain an Associate Degree in Dental Assisting in eighteen months to two years.

To find out more, contact for accredited Dental Assistant Schools on our website and learn what it takes to become a certified dental assistant.

Insurance men doubted that providing insurance for dental care was impractical for insurance companies. They stated that as soon as a plan would be tried, people with poor dental conditions would immediately consult a dentist. The bills, as a result, would be huge. And the insurance company would sink deeper and deeper into the red. Dental insurance is now being provided.

Presently, millions of Americans are able to use this protection. Labor unions place much importance on dental insurance and put it as one of the benefits in their packages. Why dental coverage is now so popular can be explained by the facts provided to us by the US surgeon general’s office.

Of the kids in the nation, about have will have had tooth decay by the age of five. Out of four children, one will have teeth that are aligned wrong. Tooth decay is encountered by all people at a certain time in life. Each day, around 10,000 workers or more refuse to go to work due to dental problems. About 75% of the US population do not get dental care on a regular basis.

It is therefore no surprise as to why dental insurance is valued and desired greatly. At the moment, most dental insurance plans are just given to large groups. Most programs for dental insurance are done in almost the same way as programs for medical insurance. The regular dental procedures, such as examinations, dentures, and fillings, are the only ones covered by most plans. Dental insurance plans rarely cover expensive dental services and procedures. However, one may avail of these services if the group is willing to pay more.

Two dental service plans are available. Each member of the group would pay about 0 a year for the comprehensive plan. The insurance company will only begin covering your dental expenses once you have paid the first for the dental expenses of your family. Benefits for family members are usually limited to 0 a year.

People would usually resolve to get a scheduled plan since it is easier to pay. An amount less than the dentist’s full fee is paid for by the insurer. Whatever is left after deductions are made becomes your out of pocket cost.

The fixed fee plan does not all the dentist to charge more than what is already found in the policy. Dental groups do not like these plans so much. If your group has the dollars to spare and has a fairly stable membership, dental insurance could be among your best investments in good health.

By paying more for the copayment ratio, you will wind up saving more and cutting down on costs. Dental treatment will not be as economically burdensome because of insurance. You can spot potential dental problems early on if you go for preventive dentistry.

Whether we acknowledge it or not, dental health is a very important element of our overall health. Many people take their dental health for granted. They think if they brush their teeth in the morning and at night and floss occasionally they will be okay. They think their bad teeth are not related to their bloated stomachs, stomach ailments and constipation. If they only knew how wrong they are about the relationship between their dental health and their overall well being they would rush to the nearest dentist immediately.

Good dental hygiene requires more than just brushing in the morning and at night. Brushing cleans only about sixty percent of the surface of your teeth. While flossing can help to get the plaque and other foreign matter off the surface of the teeth, you need to visit your dentist regularly so she can check on the overall health of your teeth and gums.

Bad teeth can lead to health problems. Improperly chewed food can lead to problems in your stomach. The digestion of food actually begins in the mouth. If the food is not properly crushed in the mouth it can lead to bloating in the stomach and constipation. Many times constipation can lead to an array of serious health problems. All of that can be avoided if you take care of your teeth.

St Petersburg dentists know all about this. They can explain how misaligned, rotted or broken teeth can lead to other problems. The average St Petersburg dentist will tell you that many of your ailments actually begin with the neglect of your dental health.

Make an appointment to see one of the excellent St Petersburg dentists near you. Make a long term plan for taking care of your teeth. Neglecting your teeth now can lead to very serious problems later!

Fluoride occurs naturally in the earth’s crust, water and food as the negatively charged ion, fluoride (F-). Fluoride is considered a trace element because only small amounts are present in the body (about 2.6 grams in adults), and because of the daily requirement for maintaining dental health is only a few milligrams per day. About 95% of the total body fluoride in bones and teeth.

Although its role in the prevention of dental caries (tooth decay) is well established, fluoride usually not considered an essential mineral element because humans do not need it for growth or life. But, if one takes into account the prevention of chronic diseases (caries), an important criterion in determining essentiality, and fluoride and may be considered an essential trace elements. Teeth and gums healthy is important, recent studies show that gum is a precursor to heart disease.

Fluoride comes in many forms. It is known under the following names, calcium fluoride, stannous fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate and sodium fluoride. Sodium fluoride added to drinking most of the public. The main source of fluoride is usually treated drinking water, but also shoes in foods and beverages that have been grown in areas where drinking water is fluoridated, then used in the manufacture of these products. The main function of fluoride in the body to strengthen bones and is known to prevent tooth decay. Experts say that fluoride strengthens tooth enamel by strengthening the mineral composition of the teeth themselves.

Fluoride is absorbed in the stomach and small intestine. Once in the blood is rapidly mineralized tissues (bone and teeth). In the usual intake, non fluoride does not accumulate in soft tissues. The dominant minerals in the bones are crystals of calcium and phosphate, known as hydroxyapatite crystals. high chemical reactivity of fluoride and the small radius you can move or more hydroxyl (OH-) ions in hydroxyapatite crystals, forming fluorapatite, or increase the density of the crystal by the introduction of hydroxyapatite crystals in space. hardens tooth enamel and stabilizes bone mineral fluorapatite.

The two forms insoluble complexes of calcium and magnesium fluoride and is able to reduce fluoride absorption when present in the same meal. However, the absorption of fluoride in the form of monofluorophosphate (unlike sodium fluoride) unaffected by calcium. A diet low in chloride (salt) was found to increase fluoride retention by reducing urinary excretion of fluoride.

In humans, the only effect clearly inadequate fluoride increased risk of caries (tooth decay) for people of all ages. Studies of patterns of water consumption and the incidence of dental caries through different climates and geographic regions with different concentrations of fluoride in water in the United States led to the development of a number of recommended optimal fluoride concentration of 0.7 to 1, 2 mg / liter or parts per million ( ppm), with the lowest concentration recommended for warmer climates where water consumption is higher, and the highest concentration colder climates. A number of studies conducted before the introduction of fluoride toothpaste container shown that the incidence of dental caries was 40% to 60% lower in communities with optimal concentrations of fluoride in water than in communities low concentration of fluoride in water.

Although the role of fluoride in preventing caries is well established, the mechanisms of their effects are not fully understood. Originally it was believed that fluoride incorporated into enamel during tooth development after the enamel more resistant to acids. Recent research shows that the most important action is appropriate fluoride (surface), after the eruption of the teeth in the mouth.

When the partially demineralized enamel by organic acids, fluoride in saliva can enhance remineralization of enamel of their interaction with calcium and phosphate. In the presence of fluoride, remineralized enamel contains more fluoride and is more resistant to demineralization. saliva concentrations associated with optimal fluoride intake, fluoride has been found to inhibit bacterial enzymes, thus reducing acid production by cariogenic bacteria fluoride intake is ideally begun early in childhood, when the formation of teeth and bones are still ongoing, therefore strengthen the first outbreaks in the future. Fluoride is also known to strengthen bone development. Although it is so important for the proper functioning of the human body, fluoride deficiency, but usually occurs only in regions where water is consumed on a regular basis is not fluoridation. It is much more common to see excessive intake of fluoride during the defect.

Fluoride taken in large quantities over time slowly poisons the body. Prolonged use of treated water containing more than 2 parts fluoride per million (ppm) can cause discolored or mottled brown glaze on the teeth.

Extremely high concentrations, over 8 ppm can contribute to bone, liver, kidney and adrenal insufficiency and heart, reproductive system and central nervous system. This is especially dangerous in young children and the elderly.

Recommended fluoride intake varies, but it seems the consensus among professionals no more than 2.5 milligrams per day. Of course, before you start any kind of supplements you should consult your health care provider. Overall, there is no reason to take supplements of some fluoride.

Many consumers do not understand that dental plans and dental insurance is not the same kind of product. Both dental programs will save you money on dental services and products. Yet, dental plans and dental insurance cover dental products and services in very different aspects. The whole process of obtaining a dental plan or dental insurance is different as well.

You should thoroughly research any dental plan or insurance before you purchase it. Your individual circumstance will determine which dental insurance or a dental plan can best serve you and your family. Sometimes a dental discount plan will have no threshold on coverage discounts.

This kind of plan might serve a person who has a cash reserve and needs a significant amount of dental work better than a dental plan that has a low cap on amount of benefits paid . The dental plan might serve this individual better even if it the dental insurance pays directly for some services. A good deal of research and understanding how you would use a dental plan or dental insurance is the best way to get the right insurance or discount dental coverage product for your situation.

Many dental plans will offer discounts on procedures only done by a dentist who participates in your plan. If you have a favorite dentist, you should find out which dental discount plans he will accept.. If you don’t have a regular dentist, you will want to ask at least three dental plans for a list of providers so you can find the provider who is near where you live or work. Dental discount plans like most utilize a network of providers who have agreed to apply the plan’s discount to the covered services.

You will also want to check at least three dental plans to see what kind of products and services if offers you discounts on. If you need crowns and these are not a covered discount in the plan move on, the best dental plans offer significant discounts on products .The most expensive services you are going to be paying out of pocket for are the one’s, you want to save the most on.

Many dental plans are marketed with discount vision plans and discount prescription plans. If you can get a bundled discount plan this is best way to save on multiple medical products and services. You just need to sure the other discount plans packaged with your dental plan also have providers in your area .

Most consumers find it a simple process to sign up dental plans. You will pay either a monthly or annual fee for the dental plan . They usually offer family and individual plans . Some may charge a sign up fee, especially if you are paying month to month. The effective date of the plan is when you have paid the required fees. You can start using these plans right away and you will receive a list of providers, covered services and products, and membership cards.

Dental insurance involves a, much complicated process for consumers. They will want to know your past dental health and they will have restrictions on covering pre existing conditions for a very significant quantity of time. The insurance plans ,like dental discount plans usually require you use their network of providers. You will also need to make sure the dental insurance you are looking at has a provider in your areas. You should check first for the availability of group dental plans that you can buy into from work or a trade organizations. Group plans provide the most coverage for the money and generally have a larger provider network.

You will not only have to provide medical and dental information on yourself; but any family members you wish to cover.. Since the dental insurer, might not offer you coverage it is a good idea to have a list of at least three insurers you is interested in receiving coverage from.

Dental insurance involves a more complicated payment procedure like co -payments, deductibles, and coverage caps on certain procedures. You have to do a lot of research to find the one that covers services you need at a price you can afford. They also pay differently. Some dental insurance will reimburse you are you have submitted a claim and paid the dentist. Others pay the dentist directly after you have paid your required share.

The best dental insurance for families is that which covers routine care. If you have several children ,who need dental check ups every six months this kind of coverage is very important. You should have routine dental care . Routine dental care prevents the need in the future for much of the very expensive procedures, It is the more expensive procedures that your insurance probably limits financial reimbursement . You should look for insurance plans that allow you to maintain good dental health.

Poor dental health can be a contributing factor to things like heat disease. It could also cause cosmetic concerns. The loss of teeth that can be seen can affect our self image. Cosmetic dental services are many times are not covered by dental insurance. If a dental discount plan or dental insurance is out of your reach financially ;you should check with your local dental school. Many dental schools provide dental services at a greatly discounted rate or on a sliding fee scale.

Good dental healthis essential to the health of your entire body. Proper brushing and flossing help keep bacteria in your mouth from causing tooth decay and gum disease. When your teeth are not properly cared for and these problems develop, bacteria can more easily enter into your bloodstream causing serious medical issues.

The Health Risks of Poor Dental Health

Once bacteria enter your bloodstream they can begin to wreak havoc on the rest of your body. Several medical studies have linked gum disease to medical problems such as:

Cardiovascular disease
Endocarditis
Pregnancy complications including low birth weight and premature birth

These problems can impact anyone, but people with certain diseases and illnesses need to pay special attention to their oral hygiene. Preexisting medical conditions that cause a higher risk of developing gum disease and other dental problems include:

Diabetes
HIV/AIDS
Osteoporosis

Preventing Dental Health Issues

Fortunately, preventing dental health issues is relatively simple.

Proper oral hygiene begins at home, and takes less than five minutes a day. Taking time to brush your teeth after every meal, or at least twice a day removes plaque from your teeth. Plaque is an acidic film that naturally forms from the bacteria in your mouth. If not removed, it can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

The second step in a proper oral hygiene routine is flossing at least once daily. Flossing removes plaque from in between your teeth and underneath your gums. This is particularly important for avoiding gum disease.

Many people choose to follow flossing with an antiseptic mouthwash. While this is not necessary, it can help further reduce bacteria and help keep your breath fresh.

Equally important to daily at-home cleanings are biannual visits to your dentist. Your dentist can remove plaque and tarter buildup that cannot be removed at home. In addition, your dentist will provide an examination along with cleanings to detect early signs of gum disease and tooth decay. Early detection allows your dentist to treat these diseases before they cause larger, systemic issues.

Proper dental health will help ensure your teeth and body stay clean and healthy. Taking just a little time every day to brush and floss can keep your natural teeth strong and beautiful for years to come.

Dangers of Plaque & Gingivitis to Your Health, Part 1:

Sticky bacterial plaque that builds up on your teeth. Inflamed, bleeding gums. They don’t just threaten your dental health. A growing body of research finds that bacteria and inflammation in your mouth are also associated with other problems, including heart attack and dementia, and may well jeopardize your overall health. Scientists have identified several associations between poor oral health and other health problems — although they can’t yet establish cause and effect. This list of health problems has been growing as research continues.

Plaque and Its Effects on Your Dental Health:
Sticky plaque is a kind of biofilm. A thin grouping of bacteria, plaque biofilm lives on gum tissue, teeth, and crowns. Plaque constantly forms on your teeth. When you eat or drink foods or beverages with sugars or starches, the bacteria release acids that attack your tooth enamel. The plaque is so sticky that it keeps the acids in contact with your teeth, in time breaking down the enamel so that tooth decay occurs. Plaque buildup can also lead to gum disease — first gingivitis, the tender and swollen gums that sometimes bleed. If it progresses, severe periodontal (gum) disease can develop. Gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, allowing the bacteria to destroy the underlying bone supporting the teeth.

Periodontal and Other Diseases:
To date, scientists have found associations between periodontal disease and a number of other problems, including:
• Heart disease
• Diabetes
• Dementia
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Premature birth

What’s behind the links? Experts can’t say for certain, but they believe that oral bacteria can escape into the bloodstream and injure major organs.
Inflammation is probably a common denominator, experts say. Periodontal disease, marked by inflammation, may increase inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation, in turn, is an underlying problem in diseases including heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

Gum Disease and Heart Disease:
Over the years, many studies have found an association between periodontal disease and heart disease, with patients who have gum disease more likely also to have poor heart health, including heart attacks. In 2009, a consensus paper on the relationship between heart disease and gum disease was developed by the American Academy of Periodontology and The American Journal of Cardiology. It was published in the Journal of Periodontology and The American Journal of Cardiology.

The joint recommendations encourage cardiologists to ask their patients about any gum disease problems, and the periodontists to ask their patients about any family history of heart disease and their heart health.
So don’t be surprised if your periodontist or your internist or cardiologist asks you some new questions on your next visit.

Children with disabilities and special needs are at a higher risk of health problems. Special needs children need extra help to achieve and preserve physical health, including dental health. A clean mouth is the most essential requirement for good health. Children with special needs have enough problems without having poor health due to poor oral health adding to their other life problems.

Special needs children are those who have special requirements due to developmental, physical, emotional or behavioral conditions who need help from caregivers and associated services.

Common oral problems such as tooth decay or gum diseases put all children and adults at risk for other health problems. However, special needs children often have more oral health problems than the general population. For instance, children with disabilities may have problems with mobility, behavioral problems, neuromuscular problems, cognitive problems, gastroesophogeal reflux problems, or seizures. These problems may make it impossible for disabled children to tend to their own oral care, which puts them at risk for tooth decay, gum disease, and other health problems.

What causes oral health problems in special needs children?

Some factors of poor oral health include:

Lack of saliva– Special needs children who require help with drinking may make less saliva than children who are able to drink on their own. Saliva is very important to assist with the washing away of food particles after eating

Genetics– Some genetic disorders in young children may cause defects in the tooth enamel. Sometimes, genetics causes factors which lead to tooth loss and misalignment of teeth. The misalignment of teeth may be caused by jaws that don’t line up properly to each other.

Physical limitations– Some children have physical limitations in their mouths. For instance, a child who cannot chew or move his tongue properly may not benefit from the tongue’s natural cleaning action.

Children with poor motor skills, such as those with muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, or spinal cord injuries may not be able to brush and floss properly. Special needs children may not be able to complete the techniques required to give themselves proper oral care.

Special diets– Children who have difficulty swallowing or chewing may also have problems. They can be fed pureed foods, but if they cannot swallow well, the food may stick to the teeth and oral tissues; food debris left in the mouth can cause tooth decay and gum disease.

Medications– Children using medications, especially sweet medications, may be at risk for tooth decay. For instance, a few anti-seizure medications can result in tooth decay, as well as bleeding and swelling of the gums.

Conclusion

It is possible to spread germs to your children’s mouth, so remember never place anything from your mouth into your child’s mouth. As a parent of a special needs child, you will be responsible for helping the child brush his teeth. Your special needs child may not be able to assist at all in oral care, so it would be your responsibility to provide him with the care he needs.

Never leave your special needs child (or any child) lying down with a bottle, or propped with a bottle. Milk, formula or any other liquid, other than water, can collect in the mouth of a resting child and cause bacteria to form in the mouth. Aside from that, there is a risk of aspiration when the child is lying down with a bottle.

Another thing to remember is that good nutrition is good for the mouth and the body, and poor nutrition can be detrimental to them. Soda, candy, sweet drinks and other concentrated sweet foods may cause cavities.

This year make a New Year resolution that you and your family can smile about. The focus on dental health care for your children in this New Year can turn out to be a resolution as a parent that will pay dividends for your child’s health and their smile for a lifetime. Here are a few ways to get started:
Make your kids dental health a priority
A key part of establishing good dental health is a good teeth cleaning routine. The key to success with any new habit is to not start with a big goal, but something you can work into your daily routine that is easy to do and makes you feel better. For example; brushing one more time a day, adding flossing to your routine, or using a mouthwash after meals. One small change in your dental routine will create large improvements in your dental health and the health of your children. So resolve to brush your child’s teeth twice a day especially before going to bed at night. Emphasise on cleaning between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner as decay-causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. Supervise tooth brushing until your child is seven or eight years old and focus on effective tooth brushing throughout their lives.
Add new colours
Add new colours to your child’s dental health kit by buying new toothbrushes in this New Year. Replace your kid’s toothbrush every three or four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning their teeth. And even change their toothbrush after they have flu or a cold.
Take your child to the dentist
Once you’ve established a good tooth brushing routine at home, the next step is the first trip to the dentist. One resolution that could enhance your child’s dental health is to make sure that your kid visits a dentist with you at least twice in 2010. When you visit the dentist try to be positive about it and make the trip fun. Avoid using negative clichés. This will help to stop them worrying about future visits.
Encourage healthy eating habits
Good nutrition is an important aspect in maintaining good dental health. Encourage a balanced diet routine to be followed by your little ones and limit in between-meal snacks. Avoid giving them sugary drinks and sticky food stuffs. Make healthy nutritious food for your kids at home and teach them the importance of a balanced diet. This year try the “rainbow challenge”: How many different colors of fruits and veggies can they eat in a day? A week? This family game can be a lot of fun and become a great booster for improving their eating habits.
Quit smoking
Don’t make your presence disturb your child’s overall health. After all, if you won’t care for your loved ones then who shall? This year is an opportunity for you to give it another sincere effort to quit all those habits that can ruin your child’s happiness. Try it and show your little ones that you care.
Spend time and money wisely
Gifts in the form of clothes or games played with them, rewards in the form of verbal praises and spending quality time with your kids shall always be valued more than a box of chocolates or a bottle of cold drink in the long run. So make healthy choices if you really love them and if you want to see them smiling forever.
Overall Commitment
Remember dental health care of your child requires a commitment from the whole family. It will be much easier for your children to accept-maybe even embrace-changes to their eating habits and activity level if they are not doing it alone. So first follow all these rules yourself. Kids do whatever they see. So be careful and smile healthy.

Society today provides more and more temptations to damage the health of one’s teeth. Smoking and drinking could have adverse negative affects to that wonderful smile.

A frequent visit to the dentist too often is something that most people certainly like to avoid but the reality is that dentists play such an important role in maintaining dental care and hygiene.

And even our kids are more exposed to sweets and other sticky stuff that can cause dental problems, dental hygiene should be given the topmost priority by everyone.

There is one thing that holds true no matter the country you live in; a fear of dentists, no matter their type, is deep within the majority of us, and there seems to be very little we can do about it. The mere thought of a masked individual sticking their hands in our mouths, with or without the high-pitched, spinning sound of a drill, is enough to make even the most courageous among us as squeamish as a baby.

So the attempt to search for a cosmetic dentist, even with the striking outcome, we all know awaits us, can be more dreary than looking for any other type of doctor. Even people are traveling to places like US and Canada for cosmetic dental surgery.

A majority of the people have some crooked teeth, a little discoloration, a chip or two, maybe a gap or even a missing tooth. Basically, 90% or more of us could really use a complete dental makeover but it is so expensive and outrageous concept that really never crosses our mind. However the time has changed and now dental porcelain veneers are quickly becoming cheaper and a great, quick alternative with massive life altering results.

Dental veneers and laminates can turn a smile with teeth that are chipped and gapped into a beautiful flawless smile by resurfacing teeth with a thin ceramic coating that also fills in the chips and gaps. As this industry is growing rapidly the prices for dental treatments are coming down in price, fuelling the demand even more.

Teeth whitening is another dental treatment that people try to avoid and postpone a visit to the dentist. This treatment has been developed to remove yellowish stains and enhance the original color of the teeth. It is very embarrassing to see a person smiling with yellow stained teeth .You may also feel discomforted while smiling to a person who has stained yellow tooth. Dental defects are not hazardous but it needs to be treated at right time so that it can be given proper treatment.

Excessive grinding and clenching of the teeth can be extremely damaging. Premature failure of dental restorations, breakage of teeth and gum line recession are common problems associated with the grinding/clenching habit known as bruxism. In our dental practice we make custom fitted guards that sell for hundreds of dollars but we offer these as an alternative when cost is a concern. After trying dozens of OTC (over the counter) mouth guard models these have proven to be the best fitting most comfortable day/night brux/clench/grind guard. These will double as a sports mouth guard but are intended to be used as a protective device for people who grind and clench their teeth and are wanting a better more comfortable fit than a sports mouth guard can offer.
