Allergies in pets can be quite a severe problem. Allergies can lead to a number of different problems in pets- everything from yeast infections, skin conditions, irritable bowel to even possibly death.

The first step in trying to resolve an allergy is to identify the cause of the allergy. Many allergies are food related, so starting with diet modification may be the best first step in ensuring your pet doesn’t end up in a pet urn before its time. A protein elimination diet is usually the best method of identifying food allergies. You will want to start your dog on a novel protein- a source of food that he has never before tried. You’ll want to ensure that it doesn’t have ingredients that could be causing the allergy- like grains or other additives. Many people will purchase and prepare food for their dogs during this elimination diet, to ensure they have a source of food that is unlikely to contain any of the allergens that may be upsetting the dog.

Feed the dog this novel source of protein for several weeks, and monitor your dog’s health. If the dog does not exhibit allergies anymore, then you were most likely dealing with a food allergy, since the condition has stopped once you removed the source of the food allergen.

If the allergy problem does not exist when the dog is eating the novel protein, then you can slowly begin to introduce new food sources to your dog. Introduce food choices one at a time, monitoring your dog’s condition throughout this period. If and when the allergy returns, the last protein you fed your dog was likely the cause of that allergy. Once you have identified the source of the food allergy, you can return to a relatively normal diet for your dog, just ensuring that you avoid the particular cause of the food allergy.

A similar elimination process should be used for environmental allergens if the allergy persists once you change the source of your dog’s food.

Attempt to isolate the dog in an environment without potential allergens, and slowly reintroduce fabrics, materials, toys and other things that could be potentially causing the allergy. By controlling what your dog is exposed to, you should be able to identify the particular substance or substances that are causing the allergic reaction.

Suffering from food allergies suggests that your own body overreacts to a particular substances contained in a kind of food. The circumstance is also referred to as food hypersensitivity. Among the typical signs are the burning and itching around the mouth, vomiting, eczema, and asthma. Researches reveal that virtually 90% of the allergies are being caused by soy, milk, nuts, or eggs. There are two basic types of food allergy- hypersensitivity and food intolerance. Food intolerance is not as severe and is not technically the same as a full blown food allergy. Hypersensitivity from food allergy is an adverse reaction of the immune system and it is unrelated to any physical effect from the food.Food allergies will also present with abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting and many other related conditions. Wheezing and nasal congestion are other signs worth mentioning. All these signs may not be common in all people because individuals will suffer differently. Others may just have one sign and some have all the major signs of the food allergy.

There are various ways the ingredients that cause allergic reactions can sneak into the food we eat every day even if we try to avoid them. The following are some things you should take into consideration if you suffer a food allergy. For those who suffer peanut allergies, you already know how hard it can be to avoid peanuts or peanut oils. There are many times when peanuts are reflavored and passed off as a different type of nut. Be sure you always read product labels carefully.Food allergy problems are a type of adverse response to a certain type of food. Generally people develop over-reactive antibodies to certain allergens. Most people are allergic to at least one type of food, whether they happen to realize that during the course of their life or not. Someone may have a food allergy to shrimp but not realize it because they have never tried it. And sometimes people go through their lives experience discomfort as a result of consuming a specific food but not knowing what to blame.

Nowadays, there are several reading materials to help you understand the things you need to know about food allergy. One such example is the book called “5 Years without Food: The Food Allergy Survival Guide: How to Overcome Your Food Allergies and Recover Good Healthy.” The book discusses overview of food allergy as well as the foods which you can and cannot eat and its alternatives. For some time, you are restricted to consume foods containing eggs. These days, there are egg substitutes which you can use such as tapioca and starch from potatoes. Apple sauce can also be an alternative.

How the household sprays can trigger asthma: The household sprays comprise of spray cleaners and air fresheners. These materials often use strong ingredients. The strong ingredients may cause asthma in some adults. It is rather the most common source of asthma attack. Recent studies show that the chances of an asthma attack increase by 30% to 50 % with the use of household sprays.

The sprays such as window cleaners, furniture sprays and air fresheners spread small particles in the air. These are inhaled very easily. Some of the ingredients in the sprays cause irritation. These ingredients are responsible for infections inside the lungs and the respiratory pipe can constricts due to this.

This leaves the patient short of breath. Some patients may feel chest pain, throat irritation, coughing and wheezing.

If the patient is suffering from asthma, then a household spray can easily trigger the asthma attack. The small particles enter ones lungs and respiratory system which cause basic symptoms of asthma. The patient starts feeling short of breath, as his respiratory system start contracting. Coughing may start due to irritation in the throat and lungs.

Substitutes to the household cleaning sprays: The household sprays comprise of a wide range of materials. These are inclusive of hair sprays, air fresheners, spray cleaners and plant sprays. These sprays may contain chemicals that are harmful to the asthma patient. One can avoid these harmful sprays by using substitutes instead of these sprays. Some of the hardwood cleaners such as Easy Off can trigger an asthma attack instantly as it contains higher levels of ammonia. Instead of spray hardwood cleaners, use liquid cleaners. Studies have shown that liquid cleaners have no effect on the respiratory system.

Using eco friendly domestic cleaners is another option. There are several manufacturers which produce organic cleaners. These do not contain harmful and strong chemicals. These are available in the form of fluids or dry powders. The powders are added in water to make think pastes or solutions. Such solutions are safer than spray cleaners.

Make use of bleaches as much possible. However the bleach should be chosen according to the furniture type. Some of the strong bleaches can harm the wooden furniture when used for cleaning. For cleaning the floor and other things, solutions such as Bacterial Wipes can be used. This solution is a good disinfectant and less harmful.

The best cleaning solution for any kind of stain is water and vinegar. The solution is mild and does not contain any fragrance. This solution can be used on any kind of surface, except the tops of quartz counters. For cleaning a wooden shelf, one can use a damp cloth and static dusters for dusting. Both these things avoid the spread of dust in the air. Dry baking soda can remove stains very effectively.

The easiest way to clean a glass surface is to spray water. Wipe the wet surface with paper instead of cloth. This procedure cleans the surface effectively.

Substitutes for air fresheners: This is a little tricky. However one can use cinnamon oil for scenting. It can be heated to spread the fragrance in the room. Similarly use different types of oils and heat them for fragrance. These work better rather than room fresheners which can trigger respiratory problems.

Seasonal allergies affect people during specific months, usually because of exposure to certain airborne allergens such as pollen. An allergic reaction to pollen, often diagnosed as hay fever or allergic rhinitis can irritate the membranes around the nose and the eyelids. In effect, people with allergic rhinitis will experience symptoms such as runny nose, nasal congestion, frequent sneezing, itchy eyes, nose, ears and throat, post-nasal drip, and generalized fatigue.

There may also be some wheezing and a chronic cough may develop. When the symptoms are too severe, it may develop into asthma. This can cause discomfort, and may even be fatal, especially to infants and young children.

Seasonal allergies affect about 20 percent of Americans and are considered one of the most common illnesses in the United States. They can affect you at anytime of the year, depending on where you live. They develop because the body is trying to increase its immunity against pollens, usually from trees such as maple, olive, juniper, birch and elm. Grass and pollinating weeds can also trigger allergic reactions. These are plants that depend on cross pollination through the air. Plants that are pollinated with the help of insects, such as dandelions, do not cause seasonal allergies.

Cure For Seasonal Allergies

To deal with seasonal allergies, you need to study pollen activity in your area. You can do this by signing up on online sites that give daily free readings. Avoid exposure to pollen whenever the pollen level is high.

The best cure for allergies is to avoid exposure to seasonal allergens, although this may be a little difficult when outdoors. It may be controlled by turning on air conditioners, closing windows and using air filters.

If exposure to pollens can not be avoided, wear protective gear such as eyeglasses, clothes covering your arms and legs and an air mask. Conjunctivitis may develop and can severely damage your eyes if it worsens into a condition called atopic keratoconunctivitis, which can lead to blindness. Symptoms include burning eyes, itchiness, mucous discharge from the eyes, a blurring vision and over sensitivity to sunlight. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult your doctor right away.

Most doctors would first conduct tests such as blood and skin tests to find out what exactly is causing the allergies. Allergens are injected into the skin, and if swelling or red spots occur, then the patient is allergic to these substances.

Patients who suffer from seasonal allergies can be quite restricted from doing their daily tasks in school or at the office. Medications and frequent doctor visits can take a toll on a family’s finances, that most people would go for allergy shots that may have more permanent results than over the counter medications.

Allergic rhinitis is often treated with anti-histamines, decongestants and nasal sprays. It is not right to do self-medication, however, because some medications may have severe side effects or contraindications for people who are taking medicines for other diseases. It is best to consult your doctor first before taking any over-the-counter medications for allergies.

Depending upon your individual situation, your allergist will recommend one, two or all three of the following treatments:
1. MEDICATION: Using pharmaceuticals in various forms to block the symptoms of allergy. Although this does not do anything to eliminate the specific allergy causing those symptoms, it is at times a necessary part of treatment, especially in asthma or severe nasal allergy.

2. ALLERGEN AVOIDANCE: Eliminating or decreasing your exposure to the substances to which you are allergic. The less of the allergy-causing material you breathe in, the more comfortable you will be, and the less medication you will require (can’t complain about that).
3. IMMUNOTHERAPY (ALLERGY INJECTIONS): Injecting the actual substances to which you are allergic, in order to produce a degree of tolerance to them. The allergist at first injects very minute amounts of the allergens, and then very slowly and gradually increases the dose over time, thereby decreasing your degree of sensitivity.
An effective approach to managing skin allergies has three components. Firstly you must understand the condition, then you must discover if anything is triggering your skin reaction, and thirdly you must look after your skin.

Many people think that allergies only affect the respiratory or digestive systems, but they can also affect your largest organ- your skin. As with other allergies the immune system overreacts to the presence of certain substances and releases inflammation-producing chemicals. Do some research and talk to your doctor. You can be confident of controlling your skin condition better if you are sure you understand what causes it.

The second component in managing a skin allergy is identifying then eliminating the allergens and irritants that start the itching/scratching cycle. There are over three thousand known triggers for skin allergies. Many are natural, but there are plenty of man-made ones too.

A common man-made trigger is latex, which comes from the sap of the Brazilian rubber tree. The natural proteins and those added in the manufacturing process can trigger an allergic reaction. Most people are aware that this can lead to reactions if you wear latex gloves. However latex is also present in baby pacifiers, balloons, pencil erasers and elastic bands in undergarments. There can also be problems when latex particles become airborne and are inhaled. If you have a latex allergy try to avoid the material and use vinyl or plastic where possible.

Nickel is another trigger. In addition to the obvious nickel-containing metallic objects like coins and jewelry, nickel is also present in everyday objects like scissors, bathroom and kitchen cabinet handles, and zippers. Mascara, eye shadow and eye pencils also contain nickel. Experts estimate that the number of people suffering from a nickel allergy has risen about 40% in the last decade. Much of this is believed to be due to the popularity of body piercing. Some foods also have natural nickel content and people who suffer severe symptoms may need to restrict their diet under medical supervision. At present there is no way to desensitize a person with a nickel allergy. Avoidance is the best strategy.

The third component of effective management is looking after your skin. The easiest thing to do is to keep your fingernails short to reduce the damage caused by scratching.

Managing your skin’s condition means firstly moisturizing and softening the skin to ensure it does not dry out. Your doctor may recommend you use topical corticosteroid preparations to control the inflammation.

When you take a bath soak in lukewarm water for 20 to 30 minutes. Do not have hot baths or showers, as the heat will increase skin dryness and itching. You can add oatmeal or baking soda to the bath for a soothing effect, though it does not help moisturize the skin.

Use a mild soap or a non-soap cleanser with neutral pH (pH7). If you wish to add bath oils do so after you have been in the water so that it can seal in the moisture. Do not use bubble baths as they can form a barrier that stops the bathwater moisturizing your skin.

After the bath dry yourself by patting your skin with a soft towel. This helps retain moisture. Immediately after drying your skin apply a lotion or emollient cream to help your skin retain the moisture.

To look after your skin you will also need to avoid situations where you will experience extreme physical contact, heavy perspiration, or heavy clothing. This may mean avoiding some sports. Swimming is permissible if you rinse the chlorine from your skin as soon as you leave the pool, and use a moisturizer after drying yourself.

Follow these three steps and you will be able to control your skin allergy and minimize its impact on your everyday life.

Our well-being and state of health is determined by our physiological ability to adapt to our environment, what the scientific community calls our “total stress load.”

The ever-growing list of pollutants of the air, water, and land add to a long list of naturally-occurring allergens which constantly bombard our senses, forcing our adaptive mechanisms to adjust. And while many of us are able to make these physiological adjustments with relative ease, for others the adaptive process effectively weakens them, pushing their total stress load beyond the healthy tolerance level. The result, for a growing number of people, are allergies. And with over 12 million artificial chemicals presently in use in the US alone, and an estimated 1000 new toxins being introduced into our environment every month, the incidence and rise of allergies and respiratory problems among both adults and children is nothing short of alarming. And these chemicals are not just isolated to the air we breath–which is cause enough for serious concern–they are finding their way into our water, drinks, drugs and medications, cosmetics, textiles, and of course, our food. The food we feed our children.

The commonly-accepted definition of an allergy is a sensitivity to a substance that doesn’t ordinarily bother most people. Many scientists believe this definition needs to be amended to reflect the many commonly-used chemicals, foods, inhalants, and other environmental factors which are affecting larger and larger sectors of the population–not just select groups. An allergic reaction can involve the individual’s immune system, but non-immunological responses are also possible. And when children begin to display symptoms of allergies, it’s quite often impossible to immediately distinguish them from those of a common cold, flu, or hay fever. Children often suffer for months or even years while parents attempt to discern the source of their kid’s misery.

Children are exposed to potentially harmful environmental conditions every day–and in many cases, no amount of adaptation will save them from suffering. In the home (in the foods they eat, exposure to cigarette toxins, pet hair, dander, and molds, unclean water, household cleaning products, gas from carpeting, fumes from paint–not to mention the rising use of harmful chemicals in the yard and garden), in the school (asbestos in many old buildings, contaminated air-conditioning systems, lead paint, commercial disinfectants, and a whole assortment of cosmetics and personal grooming products), and of course, in the outside world (carbon monoxide, methane gas, fumes from motor oil and gasoline, paint, pesticides, herbicides, and thousands of other commonly-used toxins)–children pay the price. A price that can be debilitating for some kids. Allergies can go far beyond just the runny nose or sneezing spells, they can affect their breathing, skin, bowels, and even their cognitive and reasoning skills (their ability to think clearly).

While food allergies had long been thought of as simply a pre-disposed inability to tolerate a particular food (strawberries, for instance), science is now recognizing that many children are not just responding to an inherent pre-disposed intolerance, many are developing an intolerance due to the amount of pollutants a food may carry. While common foods such as corn (including corn syrup, corn starch, corn oil), eggs, fish (and fish oil), milk (including cheese and butter), nuts (especially peanuts and peanut butter), and wheat (found in most baked goods and cereals), are at the top of the intolerance list, a number of other common foods are being added due to the environmental conditions these foods are typically subjected to–including tomatoes, shellfish, celery, soy, and a number of other foods ordinarily considered quite healthy. Thus, while statistically, foods are the most common source of allergies in kids, it can be quite an ordeal to figure out which one–or ones–is the culprit. An ordeal that can be performed by the parent only through a strict process of trial and error elimination.

Allergists suggest that when a parent suspects that a food is the source of their kid’s symptoms, they begin with the list of commonly in-tolerated foods and remove them from the child’s diet one at a time, eliminating each for a period of 12 days, while watching for obvious signs of improvement. No improvement, feel free to replace that food, then target another. It’s important to remember that should milk be the suspected culprit, a parent must eliminate all milk products to properly screen: not just the obvious sources such as whole milk and cheese, but also its inclusion in countless products you may not even suspect contain milk. (Read labels.)

When the elimination process fails (and may have to be extended to environmental conditions in and around the home, school, and beyond), a parent must then consider identifying the source of the problem through an allergy identifying test administered by your doctor, or in some areas of the country, at your local clinic. But be certain to ask if your doctor or clinic is certified by the American Association of Clinical Immunology and Allergy. Also, a parent would be well-advised to independently research allergies to be certain of all the options (but seek reputable sources like the Mayo Clinic or John Hopkins Hospital–not Wikipedia). You will also find that there are a large number of natural curatives and homeopathic remedies that have proven very effective in many cases.

A word of caution for some: before using any of these remedies, make sure that you have no allergy for them.

Take small garlic and cut into pieces. Mix it with 10 g of honey. Wait for an hour. Use this daily twice after meals.
Take some honey in a container and smell it when you find it difficult to breathe. It helps you to breathe properly.
Mix 5ml of honey to 5ml of gooseberry extract and take daily in the morning.
Mix 5ml of lemon juice in a cup of water and take at meals time. But make sure that you have no allergy for lemon.
The roots of bitter gourd work wonderfully. Make the paste of roots and to a teaspoon of paste add a teaspoon honey. Take this daily at night time regularly for a month. You can see the difference yourself.
Take a handful of drumstick leaves and boil them in 200 ml water for 5 minutes. Add salt, pepper and lemon juice to taste. This works like a tonic.
Take a teaspoon of ginger juice and mix to a teaspoon of decoction (a table spoon of fenugreek seed can be boiled in a cup of water) of fenugreek seeds. Add 2 teaspoons of honey and take daily.
Take a teaspoon of turmeric powder with a glass of milk, two or three times daily. It acts best early in the morning when taken on an empty stomach.
Use ginger and garlic in an herbal tea to control asthma. Boil a small piece of garlic in a cup of milk and take daily to control asthma in its preliminary stages.
During the attack, massage mustard oil mixed with little camphor over the chest. This will loosen up phlegm and help in breathing.
Vitamin B6 also prevents asthma. Daily intake of 50 mg of B6 helps prevent it. But take this under the advice of your doctor.
Soak some dry figs in water at night and drink the water with figs in the morning in an empty stomach to clear mucus from bronchial tubes. You can observe the difference within two months.
Mix mashed garlic and horseradish (100 g of each), 150 g of butter and 600 g of honey. Heat this mixture till honey dissolves. Keep it in an air tight container. Take 1 tbsp 1 hour before meal for 2 months.
Boil 5 g of dry crushed quince leaves in a cup of water and steep for 1 hour. Strain and take 2 tbsp 3-4 times a day before meal. The remedy can reduce asthma attack.
Boil 2 tbsp of mashed turnip put in a cup of water for 15 min. Filter and drink ¼ cup 4 times a day or 1 cup before bed.

Addendum: Reishi is a mushroom that has the ability to reduce allergies and stops chemicals that cause inflammation including histamine. It is also can be used as an immune tonic.

Asthma patients should take some precautions in food.

They should use fresh vegetables and fruits, sprouts and cereals.
Should take foods that are low in fats and carbohydrates.
Should avoid deep fries, processed foods, pickles, strong tea, coffee and alcohol.
Light exercise and breathing exercises are very helpful.
Fasting once a week is good for their health.

Food allergy is an abnormal response to a food, which is triggered by the immune system. Food allergies can cause mild or severe discomfort and often enough, even lead to death. The most common food allergies involve:

Fish and shellfish, such as shrimp, lobster and crab

Milk and dairy products

Eggs

Nuts and peanuts

However, food allergies should not prevent you from going out and enjoying a tasty meal in a nice restaurant. If you follow certain tips, you have nothing to worry about.

1. Find where the food allergens may be hiding

Sometimes it is not easy spot food allergens, since they may be hidden in places you normally wouldn’t even think of. Let’s see how you can avoid food allergens, according to the food you are allergic to:

If you are allergic to milk and dairy products, hidden food allergens may be found in hot dogs, canned tuna, margarine made from corn oil, as well as chocolate chips, coconut cream flavoring and grilled steaks.

If you are allergic to eggs, hidden ingredients may be found in milky way or snickers bars, nougat, bagels, pretzels and pasta in prepared foods.

If you are allergic to nuts, you should avoid granola.

If you are allergic to fish and shellfish, you should avoid Caesar salad, foods with omega-3 fatty acids (like salmon), baby cereals and soy milk.

2. Ask to see the menu in advance

You can try to find the menu of the restaurant you want to visit online, so that you will know beforehand if you can safely eat over there or if you should look for something else instead. If you cannot find the menu online, you can call the restaurant and ask for the menu to be sent to you via email or via fax. If for some reason they refuse to send you the menu, you should take this as a negative sign.

3. Talk to the chef

Call the restaurant and ask to talk to the chef. Explain to him that you have a food allergy and ask for his professional opinion on what you can eat. Ask for alternative dishes as well as for special ways your food can be cooked so that your health will not be at risk. If it is possible, go to the restaurant and ask to speak to the chef in person. It is best if you go over there early in the week, at a time when he will not be that busy and will have more time to devote to you. Under no circumstances should you feel embarrassed talking to the chef. Your safety is what matters the most, so it is absolutely crucial to have all your questions answered before deciding to eat over there. If you notice that the chef is reluctant talking to you, refuses to answer all your questions, or is being vague, then you should not bother eating in that restaurant.

4. Allergy cards

It is important to have your allergy written down somehow to protect yourself in case something goes wrong. There are available printable allergy cards on line that you can get for free. You can also ask the chef to sign this card every time he delivers your order. if you travel to a foreign country you can have your allergy cards translated in the language spoken over there.

5. Bring your medications with you

It is better to be safe than sorry, so you should always carry your food allergy medications with you whenever you go out to eat.

Good luck!

More than 35 million Americans face the sneezing, wheezing, runny nose, and itchy, watery, red eyes that accompany seasonal allergies triggered when trees, grasses, flowers and other plants begin to release their pollens into the air.

These symptoms can range from moderately irritating to life threatening as the mucous lining of the respiratory system become irritated, then inflamed. Symptoms can escalate into sinus infections and asthma attacks. Even when not life threatening, symptoms can be temporarily debilitating.

Although there is no guaranteed natural prevention or cure, as with all chronic ailments, diet and exercise are the keys to keeping allergies in check and reducing the severity of symptoms.

Foods that help with chronic allergic conditions are foods rich in antioxidants
Beta Carotene helps keep mucous membranes healthy. Foods rich in beta carotene include apricots, asparagus, beef liver, broccoli, sweet potato, yellow corn, squash.

Vitamin C foods are recommended for their antihistamine effect. Broccoli, oranges, papaya, peppers (any kind or color) strawberries, sweet potato and tomato are all high in Vitamin C

Vitamin E is an antioxidant and helps boost the immune system. Foods high in Vitamin E are almonds, peanut butter, safflower oil, salmon sunflower seeds and walnuts.

Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids reduce inflammation and produce sinus health. They are found in cold water fish such as salmon, herring, sardines and anchovy. They are also found in olive oil

Bananas are said to have chemicals that relieve allergy symptoms (unless you’re allergic to bananas). Eat one banana a day.

Water cress is high in a multitude of vitamins. Eat it in salads, sandwiches etc.

An herbal remedy for allergies is usually one that has the ability to relieve congestion, loosen mucous, and sooth inflammation. Of course, don’t overlook the importance of the ones that strengthen your immune system.

Eucalyptus is strongly anti bacterial, antiseptic and stimulant with expectorant and antibiotic properties. It helps loosen chest congestion and quiets a cough.

Red Clover is used to ease allergy related asthma symptoms. It is a blood and lymph cleanser, and has antispasmodic and expectorant qualities.

Alfalfa is thought to relieve the symptoms of allergies and in addition is a great nutrient to help support the nervous system and help inflamed mucous membranes return to normal. Some people have reported allergic reactions to alfalfa, so if your symptoms worsen stop taking it.

Apple Cider Vinegar is effective in killing 89% of all known bacteria. It is rich in many vitamins and minerals. It reduces the amount of mucous produced and soothes sore throats.

Rose Hips are high in Vitamin C and help enhance the immune system and fight off illness.

Astragalus is highly antiviral and stimulates the immune system by increasing the presence of T-cells in the body. It not only helps ward off illness it increases the body’s ability to remove toxins.

Irish Moss is red algae that grows in the Atlantic coast of Europe and North America. It lessens the symptoms of cold and flu and when consumed in the winter is considered to prevent upper respiratory ailments of all kinds.

Stinging Nettle is a natural antihistamine. Studies show that taking about 300 milligrams daily of stinging nettle will offer relief for most people, although the effects may only last a few hours. Some herbalists suggest that taking nettle over a long period of time (two years or more) will eliminate allergies.

Mullein leaf is a great way to reduce the itchy, watery eyes and runny/ stuffy nose symptoms of allergies.

Nasal Saline Irrigations

Normal saline solution is an effective way to wash pollens out of your nose and sooth irritated mucous membranes.

You can use a bulb syringe, netti pot, nasal spray bottle or simply pour a little saline solution in your palm, close off one nostril and sniff the solution from your palm. Blow your nose and repeat with the other nostril. Repeat every 2 to 4 hours as needed.

Sterile saline solution can be purchased in single use doses, but it’s expensive. It’s less expensive and easy to make your own

1 cup warm distilled water
1/4 to ½ teaspoon sea salt (or table salt)
pinch of baking soda (optional)

Dissolve the salt (and baking soda if using) in the water and put it into a jar or bottle with a tight fitting lid. Bacteria can grow in this solution so if the solution isn’t all used up in 24 hours pour the remainder out, wash the container and make a fresh batch.

Other helpful hints

Reduce stress. Stress causes the body to produce cortisol which causes irritation and inflammation in the blood vessels and mucous membranes. To reduce stress, have a massage, or exercise, or drink a cup of chamomile or other nervine herb tea. Exercise not only builds the entire body and all it’s systems, it also reduces stress.
Exercise at least 30 minutes a day.
Eat a healthy diet.

Yes, there we are, right back to that healthy lifestyle again! Exercise and eating healthy foods benefits your entire body and, over a period of time you may see a reduction of allergy symptoms from that alone. Some people have reported their allergies completely disappeared with prolonged adherence to a healthier lifestyle.

Healthy eating doesn’t have to be yuck! Or bland. For some tips on healthy eating check out these sites
MUFA Diet
MUFA Recipes
More Healthy Recipes

Yes, I admit it, these sites are all weight loss diets, but if you’re at your optimum weight you’ll neither loose or gain weight, you’ll simply reap the benefits of eating healthier.

Depression is one possible symptom of allergies and food intolerances.

There are many types of depression, ranging from a somewhat negative outlook, through to full-blown major depression.

Because different people can experience an allergy to the same trigger in different ways, it is impossible to say that a specific type of depression characterizes an allergy symptom.

It is probably fair to say that allergies do not cause major depression, but may make it worse (this statement subject to change should new information become available).

Many people have described the depression associated with allergies with the following characteristics:
* Lethargy
* Low self-esteem
* Low motivation
* Difficulty getting out of bed in the morning
* Lack of pleasure in life

Coupled with insomnia, another typical allergy symptom, allergy-induced depression can look a lot like melancholic depression.

Allergic symptoms can shift, causing insomnia at night, and exhaustion and lethargy during the day leading sleeping too much during the day and inability to sleep at night.

This can also make allergy-induced depression look a lot like “atypical depression.”

Patients seeking help with depression are usually prescribed medication and possibly referred to psychiatric counseling.

This does not deal with the root cause of allergy-induced depression.

Watch out for depression that is mixed with other typical allergy symptoms. Often, certain symptoms can vary in intensity over time according to exposure to the allergen and other health-related factors.

In this case, suspect allergies, rather than an antidepressant medication deficiency.

If you suspect allergies, drag yourself to an allergist or doctor who practices environmental medicine.

You should still seek direct help with your depression because it may help while investigating allergy causes, and it may not be caused by allergies.

Investigate, as much as you are able, typical allergy triggers such as food, mold, dust, etc.

Common allergy-causing foods: wheat, gluten, corn, yeast.

Mold: do you live in a damp climate? Do you feel worse when humidity is high? Do you have mold growing in the shower, under the sink etc.? Do you have a damp basement or a leaky roof?

There are actually huge quantities of people in many Western nations that are stricken with asthma. You will discover a large number of factors that cause the signs to be highly varied. Naturally you would want to understand if something peculiar could be an indication. You very well may go for a long time without any problems at all. However, for some obscure reason unfamiliar to you, it causes a trouble out of thin air. Those are the times that you are experiencing a genuine asthma encounter, and the severity can vary. Then let’s look at those that have asthma problems every single day. Certainly other asthmatics will have issues when they work out or normally bring about physical stress.

Even so, a good portion of people with asthma only have milder types of attacks. A mild attack can take place, and then all is back to normal breathing in a very short time. A mild form of asthma is still something to be taken significantly and treated. These less severe circumstances still must be dealt with so they do not become worse. Severe attacks are much more serious and need to be resolved right away.

It is possible to identify a set of typical symptoms with all asthma situations. The airways end up less open, and naturally that means there is a decrease in available air to breath. When this occurs, there is unwanted mucus that will develop in the passages. That is when the very common symptoms show up with having problems breathing in addition to the common wheezing that is encountered. Very frequent coughing usually takes place, and that is just a response to clear air pathways. For others, there may be extra symptoms such as a constriction sensation in the chest.

Another complication involves the warning signs, and they can change a lot from one person to another. What exact problems that can result will never be the same for everybody, though. For instance, an asthmatic may exhibit only one or two symptoms or far more. The genuine asthma attacks are not typically of equal severity which is another part of the condition. The entire range can be from barely anything at all to the most severe type of attack. It is maybe impossible to predict how bad the condition can be.

In many cases there are signals that indicate an asthma attack is possible. Once again, these precursors can vary, and they usually are not the same kinds of symptoms. For instance, some of these extra signs are regular coughing primarily during the night. A person might have variable moods with becoming easily irritated or even a little bit of a hard time with breathing. As is very clear, there is a lot to look into with this situation. It is always a smart move to make an appointment with your medical practitioner if you are wondering if you may have it.
These allergy-sufferers often wonder if purifiers are good for airborne allergies. In most cases, they help in treating the symptoms of airborne allergies.

The task of the air purifiers is to remove contaminants from the air. They vary in design and sizes, although they are typically small. Most of them have been advanced in design and features but their efficiency mostly relies on their air filters which are responsible for trapping contaminants. The airborne particles are allergens freely moving throughout the air including pollen, dust, dirt, pet dander, dust mites, mildew, mold spores and tobacco. Individuals allergic to these particles may suffer from allergic attacks. The particles trapped by filters are then prevented from entering back to the room’s air. When these allergens are removed from the air, allergy-sufferers are relieved from their allergy symptoms and the relief is almost immediate for some people.

Air purifiers have been proven to remove airborne allergens, thus helping those who suffer from allergies to get some relief. It’s good to start purifying air in the room where people spend more time and that’s the bedroom. Most units are highly-portable so they can be carried around easily for transferring from room to room.

Larger particles or the ones heavier than air may not be filtered by the air purifier so they may be removed by a HEPA vacuum cleaner to prevent them from reentering the air. Quality purifiers have HEPA filters which are crucial for proper filtration of air in the room. Most air purifiers effectively filter the room’s air with HEPA filters which trap approximately 99.97% of air particles or contaminants even as small as 0.3 microns. With advancing technology, there are filters with 99.99% efficiency which can trap airborne particles as small as 0.1 microns.

Air purifiers are good for allergies caused by airborne allergens, and some individuals can have relief from the symptoms of allergies either gradually or quickly. They clean the room’s air from airborne particles without letting these contaminants reenter the air. Having a purifier at home costs much less in the long run than several visits to the doctor’s office for treatment and safer than taking prescription or over-the-counter anti-histamine medication drugs.

Do you have a chronic inflammation called Asthma? There are many abnormal conditions that occur in asthma, swelling of the walls of the airways, secretion of mucus, inflammation of the airways, etc. A few symptoms of asthma are wheezing, coughing and tightness of the chest.

All asthmatic patients should carry a pulse oximeter with them at all time. What is a pulse oximeter? A pulse oximeter responds only to pulsations. It is a medical device that is specially designed to monitor the oxygen levels within the blood. The patient’s heart rate can also be registered with the oximeter. A healthy person will normally have a reading of at least 95% saturation, though many will manage be quite content if the oximeter reveals 90%.

Many asthmatic persons who are hospitalized will have their oxygen levels checked by a pulse oximeter. The oximeter will indicate any problem rapidly. An oximeter should be used not only in the hospitals but also in your home or at work.

The PC -60E is a family oximeter that measures the percentage of oxygen saturation in the blood. It also measures the pulse rate with the accuracy and ease. A dual capable product, PC 60E allows for standard adult use and optional child or neonatal use through a pediatric probe attachment. If you, your spouse and/or your children have asthma this is the oximeter for you and your family.

The PC-60E is very easy to use for you and your family since it is portable. The oximeter has multiple features including on spot measurement of blood oxygen saturation, pulse rate and plethysmorograph capabilities. A FDA approved, lightweight and easy to carry is what the PC-60E oximeter is. It is widely used in all health care facilities but made to be used right at home.

Your dog may be showing common dog allergy symptoms if he is scratching too much, or itching away at one spot on its body. Dog allergy symptoms are very common in dogs which are kept as family pets. Domesticated dogs have much weaker systems than do their wild counterparts. This is because centuries of breeding have bred out a lot of the natural defenses that would make a dog in human to allergic reactions. So your dog can pick up allergic reactions to food, it can also have allergic reactions to biological elements in the environment or chemical elements in the environment.

Unlike human beings, a dog cannot verbally express the fact that they are having a problem. You must watch out for the changes in behavior which will alert you that your pet is having dog allergy symptoms. The most common allergic reactions the dog will have are to the foods that you are feeding it.

So the only way to alleviate this is to change the type of food that your dog is consuming. This of course is only trial and error; you will have to try different brands of dog food until you find one that alleviates the problem. You should also never feed your dog from your own table. This is because you will not be a judge whether the dog is allergic to a certain brand of food if you are contaminating the results with food from your diet. If after several attempts at changing the brand of food the dog allergy symptoms persist you should take your dog down to your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will be able to establish whether there are other causes. For instance your dog may be getting allergic reactions to chemical or biological agents in its environment.

Asthma is a worldwide concern. That’s as a result of it will not select sex, race, religion, age, and nationality. Every citizen in the world has bound dangers of obtaining asthma. Yes, it is generally hereditary but discounting the very fact that neither of your folks have the disease, you still have a half dozen% probability of plagued by it.
Asthma that’s passed on from the parents to their kids is additionally quite alarming. If one of your oldsters has the condition, you get 30% possibilities; if both your folks have asthma, you get seventy% chances of getting asthma yourself.
In the United States of America, asthma affects 7% of the population. In the United Kingdom, asthma affects 6.5% of the population. Gathering the numbers from each country, there are 300 million individuals worldwide affected with the condition. Such a variety is alarming, especially since the numbers rise by 50% each 10 years.
Asthma may occur at any age however it’s found additional common in children. In some elements of the globe together with Australia, asthma is the amount one reason of hospitalization among the young population, especially young boys. Since it is chronic and will be life-long, asthmatics do not decrease in number.
Asthma-connected Deaths
If you think asthma is but a simple medical condition, suppose again. All over the globe, asthma is considered the fourth greatest reason behind death. It’s been associated to over four,000 deaths each year in the United States alone.

The inflammation makes the airways very sensitive, and they tend to react strongly to things that you’re allergic to or find irritating. When the airways react, they get narrower, and fewer air flows through to your lung tissue. Signs of an asthmatic episode embrace wheezing, speedy respiratory (tachypnea), prolonged expiration, a rapid heart rate (tachycardia), rhonchous lung sounds (audible through a stethoscope), and over-inflation of the chest. Asthma attacks are not all the same–some are worse than others. In a very severe asthma attack, the airways will close thus a lot of that not enough oxygen gets to important organs. This condition may be a medical emergency. Individuals will die from severe asthma attacks.
Asthma attacks can be caused by many things like exercise, cold air, allergies, and breathing in bound chemicals. Someone having an asthma attack should use an inhaler or go and see a doctor for a prescription. Asthma is treated with 2 sorts of medicines: fast-relief medicines to stop asthma symptoms and long-term control medicines to prevent symptoms. Desensitization to allergens has been shown to be a treatment possibility for bound patients. Short-acting, selective beta2-adrenoceptor agonists, like salbutamol (albuterol USAN), levalbuterol, terbutaline and bitolterol. Current treatment protocols recommend prevention medications like an inhaled corticosteroid, which helps to suppress inflammation and reduces the swelling of the liner of the airways. Tremors, the main aspect impact, have been greatly reduced by inhaled delivery, which allows the drug to focus on the lungs specifically; oral and injected medications are delivered throughout the body. Currently obtainable long-acting beta2-adrenoceptor agonists embrace salmeterol, formoterol, bambuterol, and sustained-release oral albuterol.
Corticosteroids help decrease the frequency of your attacks and scale back the need for alternative medications you may use to regulate your symptoms. Nebulizers may be helpful to some patients experiencing a severe attack. Salbutamol and terbutaline inhalers are the foremost common relieving inhalers. Heliox, a mixture of helium and oxygen, might be employed in a hospital setting. Guaifenesin, an expectorant on the market over the counter, could have a little effect in managing thickened bronchial mucus. Anti-Inflammatory medications for asthma are the most vital treatment for asthma management; they help forestall swelling and reduce secretions inside the airways in individuals with asthma. Some asthma medications are used for quick relief of asthma symptoms, others to control this chronic condition. Long-acting beta-2 agonists, such as salmeterol (Serevent Diskus) and formoterol (Foradil), last a minimum of twelve hours. These corticosteroids — including prednisone, methylprednisolone, hydrocortisone and others — could be taken to treat acute asthma attacks or very severe asthma.
Asthma Treatment Tips
1.Leukotriene modifiers (montelukast, zafirlukast, and zileuton), that are used either alone to treat gentle persistent asthma.
2. Cromolyn and nedocromil, that are used to treat mild persistent asthma.
3. Theophylline, which is employed either alone to treat delicate persistent asthma or along with inhaled corticosteroids to treat moderate persistent asthma.
4. Long-term use of corticosteroids will have several side effects as well as a redistribution of fat, increased appetite, blood glucose issues and weight gain.
5. Deposition of steroids within the mouth may cause a hoarse voice or oral thrush (due to decreased immunity).
6. Leukotriene modifiers (montelukast, zafirlukast, pranlukast, and zileuton).
7. Mast cell stabilizers (cromoglicate (cromolyn), and nedocromil).
8. Antimuscarinics/anticholinergics (ipratropium, oxitropium, and tiotropium), which have a mixed reliever and preventer effect.
9. Methylxanthines (theophylline and aminophylline), which are sometimes thought of if sufficient control can’t be achieved with inhaled glucocorticoids and long-acting ?-agonists alone.
10. Antihistamines, often used to treat allergic symptoms that may underlie the chronic inflammation.
11. Methotrexate is sometimes utilized in some tough-to-treat patients.
12. Guaifenesin, an expectorant out there over the counter, could have a tiny effect in managing thickened bronchial mucus.

The chronic inflammation of the lungs in which the airways (bronchi) are reversibly narrowed is called asthma.

Asthma affects seven percent of the population, and 300 million people worldwide. During the attacks of asthma, the smooth muscle cells in the bronchi constrict, and the airways become inflamed and swollen. In the U.S. asthma causes nearly four thousand deaths when breathing becomes difficult.

Asthma attacks can be prevented by avoiding triggering factors and by drug treatment. Asthma drugs are used for acute attacks and are commonly inhaled.

In more serious asthma cases, drugs are used for long-term prevention, starting with inhaled corticosteroids. The prognosis of asthma is good with treatment.

The public has taken attention in the world and has recently focused on asthma because of its rapidly increasing prevalence, affecting up to one in four urban children.

Some people with asthma only rarely experience symptoms, it’s usually in response to triggers, where as other more severe cases may have marked airflow obstruction at all times.

Asthmatic symptoms exist in two states which are the steady state of chronic asthma, and the acute state of an acute asthma exacerbation.

Common symptoms of asthma steadily include night time coughing, shortness of breath, a chronic ‘throat-clearing’ type cough, and complaints of a tight feeling in the chest.

These symptoms can worsen gradually and rather insidiously, up to the point of an acute exacerbation of asthma. It commonly misconstrued that all people with asthma or a wheeze; their disease may be confused with another chronic obstructive pulmonary disease such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis.

If you have asthma due to allergies you are more prone to exercise induced asthma. Signs and symptoms of exercise induced asthma coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and tightness in the chest. Some people believe that if you have asthma you should not be active. The truth is being active is best for you because it strengthens your lungs so you can breathe better and easier. Here are a few tips you can you when you have asthma and are exercising:

Before exercising inhale a fast acting bronchodilator medication 15-20 minutes before exercising. To help open your airways before any vigorous activity warm up for 5 to 10 minutes with light stretching. Choose activities that are less likely to trigger asthma symptoms. Swimming is a recommended activity because it helps strengthen the lungs. Avoid activities that are usually done in cold weather, such as skiing in which causes wheezing. If you do insist on exercising in this type of weather wear a face mask because it will actually warm the air before you breathe it in.

Although it can be frustrating to have limitations on exercising , it is important to follow certain rules so that you can receive the benfits you get from exercising as well as staying healthy. Exercising strengthens your lungs but it can also trigger an asthma attack if you over do it. Don’t allow the limitations to discourage you from getting the proper exercise you need.

Milk is what you feed your infant; milk is what your infant is capable of digesting. If it isn’t mothers milk, it has to be a baby formula made out of cow’s milk. There is just no way to escape milk as food for the baby. But what do you do if your baby is allergic to milk -or more specifically, to the proteins in cows milk? Anyone involved with a food allergy, baby or adult, has it especially tough when it comes to milk. It affects 3% of all babies. Thankfully, they outgrow milk allergies.

What is a milk allergy anyway? It is a certain kind of food allergy baby might have when the immune system in the body mistakes the protein in cow’s milk (or the protein in goats milk or soy milk)for some kind of alien poison. A child with such an allergic attack can become really irritable and restless as its body tries to fight what it thinks is a poison.

So what do you do if this is the food allergy baby has? Certainly, you take your baby to the doctor for advice on what alternatives there might be. This kind of the tendency, they say, could be genetic – handed down through the genes. Thankfully, any child will outgrow this by the time they grow to be five years of age.

You need to be able to tell the difference between milk allergy and lactose intolerance though. The former is more serious. You’ll be able to tell what kind of food allergy baby has, by the time he reach six months of age. Sometimes it is rapid onset – the moment baby is fed something, there is a reaction. Sometimes, it could be slow onset, and may not show up for up to 10 days afterwards.

When your baby has slow onset, the child may gag, become colicky, have skin rashes, and they have been blood specked diarrhea (not as scary as it sounds though). With rapid onset though, it can be quite severe. The child can even stop breathing; but the more common symptoms would be bumps on the skin, hives, wheezing and throwing up.

Your pediatrician will probably ask you if you have a family history of this. And then there will be tests. A milk food allergy baby has may not be easily findable on any one test. It’s difficult, because all these symptoms are things a baby can get with other diseases too. The doctor will order an oral challenge test to know with certainty. With this test, you’re supposed to stop giving your baby any milk for a week, and then you restart milk as the doctor watches for a few hours. There could be blood tests, or an allergy skin test. The doctor will make a little pin prick on the child’s skin, and put a little spot of milk in there to test for a reaction.

It’s possible that at least for now, your child may not be allergic to breast milk. If you happen to have any dairy at all in your own diet, the proteins from that could get into your milk and cause problems for your baby. So you need to cut off all dairy yourself for now. And your doctor will tell you about alternatives there might be. And in such a food allergy baby is supposed to get hypoallergenic formula – that’s formula that has all the proteins broken down so that the body doesn’t see them as the protein that it believes it is supposed to fight. Make sure that you don’t bring home partially hydrolyzed formula – these are the cheaper variety of hypoallergenic formula, and can be dangerous. And if you hang in there, in most cases, these things go away by the time the child is one year old.

With health care on the rise it is even higher in adult asthmatic patients when compared with non-asthmatic patients and inactivity and obesity are contributing to this increase.

Many hospitals are seeing more overnight hospital stays were more common in inactive asthmatic patients regardless of body mass index (BMI), where as both BMI and physical activity were important determinants of physician consultations.

                                                           Here are three reasons why:

(A) Patients with asthma were 2.25 times more likely to have an overnight hospital stay, 1.48 times more likely to have four or more overnight hospital stays and 2.43 times more likely to have three or more physician consultations compared with patients without asthma.

(B) Inactive patients with asthma were 1.68 times more likely to have an overnight hospital stay and 1.23 times more likely to have three or more physician consultations than active patients with asthma.

(C) Inactive/obese patients with asthma were 2.35 times more likely to have an overnight hospital stay and 2.76 times more likely to have three or more physician consultations than active/normal weight with asthma.

Asthmatics whether obese or normal weight can benefit greatly from adopting and maintaining an active lifestyle. Doctors and nurses working with asthmatics should inform their patients of the benefits of an active lifestyle, and the various ways in which they can overcome asthma specific barriers to physical activity, such as exercise induced asthma. Higher activity levels not only help the individual with asthma, but also have a potential to relieve some of the burden being placed on the health-care system.
