Cough Variant Asthma is an important consition to note. Cough variant Asthma is unlike the normal asthma ,it has nothing to do with sneezing or shortness of breath. Cough variant asthma is more like a chronic cough ailment. Sever chronic cough which lasts as long as 6 to 8 weeks is termed as Cough variant asthma.

Coughing which occurs in this kind of asthma is usually dry cough not accompanied with sputum.

People suffering from cough variant asthma usually have no association with other asthma symptoms of breathlessness or sneezing.

Chronic coughing which goes on for a long period of time as long as 6 to 8 weeks. Coughing spells are known to occur either in the day or night.

Patients with night cough variant asthma are known to have sleepless nights ,as constant cough can interrupt a good restful night.

Cough variant asthma is known to increase with exposure to dust ,strong smell even cold air can sometime revoke cough asthma.Blood pressure medicine like Beta-blockers which are used even for heart disease migraine and palpation are also known to begin a cough which can lead to cough variant asthma.

Sometimes aspirin allergy can also lead to cough resulting later into asthma.Patients suffering from cough variant asthma are not recommend excess physical activities like running jogging or exercise ,as this has said to increase the ailment.

Chough variant asthma is more common in young children especially those who are suffered from common asthma when they were younger.Cough variant asthma can further lead to sneezing as well as breathlessness.

There is no particular cause for cough variant asthma ,its not viral any person prone to allergies or excess exposure to cold air can develop his asthma. Many people with the prevailing problem of sinusitis are known to develop cough variant asthma in the long run.

Its not easy diagnosing cough variant asthma ,as physical examination and chest X-ray will not detect anything. For diagnosing cough variant asthma you need to take a spirometer test ,if your symptoms and spirometer test does not mention asthma then doctors advice a special test ,called methacholine test ,this test requires special facilities. In this test ,patients are required to inhale methacholin ,if you have asthma the methacholin will cause spasm In your airways and narrow the passage of air. After the test a bronchodilator is given to the patients to open the airway which had narrowed due to methacholin.

Doctors also use regular asthma medicines to treat cough ,if the patient responds to the asthma medicine for their cough they are diagnosed with cough variant asthma. Cough variant asthma requires the same medication and care required for regular asthma ,an asthma inhaler with albuterol ipratropium and some anti-inflammatory agents are given to inhale on.

Cough variant asthma takes it own time course ,so precaution and care is required to keep it at bay. Recovery from cough variant asthma is a slow gradual process , minimum time of 6 weeks is required for the medicines to start showing results.

Cough Variant Asthma – ask your physician to learn more today.

Is There Really a Cure?

Millions of people world wide suffer from asthma, which leaves them searching for a cure. But, for many this leads to dead ends and unreliable products that claim to be the great asthma cure. Go to any online search engine and you will find thousands of products claiming to be the greatest asthma cure yet. But, most of the time this is simply not the case. These medications claim to cure asthma, but the reality is that most of them do not work, or only relieve symptoms temporarily. That is why, it is so important to study and read the small print before purchasing any of these types of products. An asthma cure is something that scientists have yet to discover, but there may be a break coming in the world of medicine. Because of recent discoveries there may be a way to cure asthma, though this is, at the moment just a study it could lead to a cure for asthma. Medical Studies and Other Information on Asthma cures

Scientists have been studying asthma for years, but a good asthma cure is something that is hard to come by. Some scientists state that there is simply not enough proof in the said “asthma cures” to prove that it can completely cure asthma, most products only reduce the amount of symptoms daily, they do not actually cure it. But today with the advances in technology a cure is definitely possible, the main thing is to keep your head up and keep looking, it is not impossible for a cure to develop in the next few years. But with all of these products that claim to be an asthma cure, which one can you trust? This can be a difficult question to answer because most of the products today do not work, but according to some, there have been people who have miraculously been cured from asthma, and claim that one of these products has resulted in their individual cure. You should be cautious and talk to your doctor before buying any of these so called “asthma cure” products, never buy one that you have not studied and talked to your doctor to see if it could be right for you.

Asthma can be a hard thing to live with, but with the proper medicines it is never as bad as you think. There are even natural treatments that can help reduce your symptoms in a safe all natural way, but again, this is not an asthma cure, it is simply used to reduce your symptoms and keep away asthma attacks. There are helpful web sites that provide you with a weekly newsletter on the latest news for asthma sufferers, this can be a great thing because if an asthma cure is discovered you will be one of the first to know. But you should not worry about the fact that there is no asthma cure at this time, because scientists are working hard to help find an asthma cure that could save thousands of lives each year. Natural treatments can also be helpful, certain roots can be boiled to make a tea, which can help with symptoms and can prevent asthma attacks, but there is still no proof as to whether this treatment actually works with everyone.

It is always a good idea to consider natural therapy because you know that it will be safe for you and for the environment, and some people generally do not like the idea of taking medication which most people are not even aware of the ingredients. You should never purchase any asthma treatment unless you are sure about the ingredients, because this can result in allergies which can in turn cause asthma attacks, you should avoid contact with whatever triggers your allergies because that can lead to very serious results. When it comes to finding a cure for asthma remember that there is no scientific proof that these cures actually work, be smart and read the small print, another thing to remember is that just because it is written on a website does not make it true, so make sure that the website you visit is legitimate.

About one in 15 people has asthma, a chronic condition whose symptoms are attacks of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. There is no cure for asthma, but most people can control the condition and lead normal, active lives.

Different things set off asthma attacks in different people. Smoke from cigarettes or a fire, air pollution, cold air, pollen, animals, house dust, molds, strong smells such as perfume or bus exhaust, wood dust, exercise, industrial chemicals–all can trigger an attack.

Asthma cannot be cured, but most people with asthma can control it so that they have few and infrequent symptoms and can live active lives.

Asthma attacks are not all the same—some are worse than others. In a severe asthma attack, the airways can close so much that not enough oxygen gets to vital organs. This condition is a medical emergency. People can die from severe asthma attacks.

Taking care of your asthma is an important part of your life. Controlling it means working closely with your doctor to learn what to do, staying away from things that bother your airways, taking medicines as directed by your doctor, and monitoring your asthma so that you can respond quickly to signs of an attack. By controlling your asthma every day, you can prevent serious symptoms and take part in all activities.

Asthma Symptoms

•	wheezing

•	shortness of breath or trouble breathing

•	coughing, either during the day or at night, but often worse at night and with exercise and activity

•	chest pain or chest tightness

•	decreases in your child’s usual or predicted peak flow or poor performance on pulmonary function tests

Preventing an Asthma Attack

House dust exposure can be lessened by using bare floors, vacuuming frequently, and changing furnace and air cooler filters frequently. You should avoid using feather, wool, or foam bedding. Use polyester pillows and plastic covers over your mattress.

It’s important to avoid all triggers to prevent having an asthma attack. Below are resources to help you manage asthma, tips to help you recognize an asthma attack and advice on planning ahead.

The best way to prevent an asthma attack is to avoid your triggers as much as possible. It’s also important to learn how to recognize what might be known as your “early warning signs” of an impending asthma attack. These are symptoms that happen just before an asthma attack begins. They tell you that your condition is about to worsen,or get out of control.

They might include things such as a frequent cough, especially during the nighttime hours, getting short of breath more easily, increased peak flow meter readings, feeling extra tired when you’re active, a change in mood toward the negative, and trouble sleeping. You might also notice signs of a cold, such as nasal stuffiness, sore throat, sneezing, or runny nose. If you notice any of these symptoms, take action quickly to prevent an asthma attack.

Regular physical activity is important for good health. Keep your environment clear of potential allergens.

Don’t smoke because smoking is always a bad idea for the lungs. Cromolyn and nedocromil, which are used to treat mild persistent asthma.

Theophylline, which is used either alone to treat mild persistent asthma Leukotriene modifiers, which are used either alone to treat mild persistent asthma.

Many asthmatics once they are being diagnosed with asthma by their doctors, they will evaluate the severity of your asthma and determine what type of asthma medication will work best for you.

While there are literally hundreds of different drugs that can be used to treat asthma, essentially there are two different categories of medicine that can be prescribed: controller medicines and quick-relief medicines.

1) Controller Medicine

This type of asthma medicine will aid in controlling the inflammation in the lungs which will allow for easier breathing and less attacks. Some known controller medicines are Vanceril, Tilade, Intal, AeroBid and Accolate. This type of asthma medicine is usually prescribed in the form of an inhalant or a pill. If you experience frequent asthma attacks, or cough uncontrollably, your doctor will probably instruct you to take this kind of asthma medicine every day.

2) Quick-Relief Medicine

While this type of asthma medicine can be quite effective, it is normally not safe for daily use. Its use is intended to control an active asthma attack, or prevent an attack once symptoms have become apparent. This type of asthma medicine is also sometimes referred to as a “rescue medicine.” Some of the known quick-relief medicines are Albuterol, Atrovent and Prednisone. This type of asthma medicine can be prescribed as a liquid, a pill and as an inhalant.

3) Other Asthma Medicine

There is also another group of medicines that are used to treat asthma. This type of asthma medicine is known as a combination medicine. Combination medicines contain both a controller medicine and a quick-relief medicine in the same inhaler. In the recent past, an inhaler has been approved that lets the user adjust the amount of medication that is being administered so it can be changed according to a person’s condition.

Common Side Effects of Asthma Medicine

All medicines have the ability to cause side effects, and an asthma medicine is no exception. While most people are able to receive asthma treatment free of unwanted side effects, there have been some side effects reported by those using an asthma medicine.

Some of the common side effects reported are headache, voice changes, sore throat, swollen glands in the neck, runny nose, hoarseness and congestion. If you experience side effects as the result of taking an asthma medicine, be sure to inform your doctor at once.

With the help of an asthma medicine, many asthma sufferers are able to lead full, active lives that are productive. While not all sufferers will experience the same level of control over their asthma, using an asthma medicine can greatly improve their quality of life.

At those times, your asthma medication will be very important to you. You won’t want to leave your home once you have your asthma medication without it. Don’t suffer anymore and make sure you get the asthma medication that you need as soon as possible!

Remember, you are not destiny to suffer from this dreadful disease as most asthma medication can free yourself from asthma attacks thus saving your life. However. you should never add to, or alter any component of your current asthma treatment without first consulting your physician.

However, many asthmatics sometimes tend to forget that although they are taking proper and effective asthma medications, but without a proper asthma recovery system, there will not be much asthma free lifestyle to hope no matter how much knowledge you have with regards to the medications.

Apply this knowledge in your medication together with an effective asthma recovery system – enjoy your life once again.

Asthma

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease—sometimes worrisome and inconvenient—but a manageable condition. With proper understanding, good medical care, and monitoring, you can keep asthma under control. Chronic condition characterized by difficulty in breathing due to spasm of the bronchi (air passages) in the lungs. Attacks may be provoked by allergy, infection, and stress. The incidence of asthma may be increasing as a result of air pollution and occupational hazard. An asthma attack can be very serious. If you have trouble breathing, call 9-1-1 for help right away. You can’t cure asthma, but you can control it. Asthma is a chronic lung condition that is characterized by difficulty in breathing. People with asthma have extra sensitive or hyper responsive airways that cause symptoms of asthma. Airways react by narrowing or obstruction when something irritates them. Making a correct diagnosis is very important, because that is the only way to treat it appropriately.

Asthma is a disease that affects the breathing passages of the lungs (bronchioles). Asthma is caused by chronic (ongoing, long-term) inflammation of these passages. This makes the breathing passages, or airways, of the person with asthma highly sensitive to various “triggers.” When an asthmatic person has an asthma attack the membranes inside the bronchial tubes release mucus and become inflamed. The inflammation causes the muscles to contract and create spasms. These muscle spasms are responsible for wheezing. Asthma is a common condition that causes coughing, wheezing, tightness of the chest and breathlessness.

Causes of Asthma

‘

The exact cause of asthma isn’t fully understood at present. Sometimes, the symptoms flare up for no obvious reason, but you may notice certain triggers that set off an asthma attack or make your symptoms worse. These triggers irritate the airways in your lungs and can include:

•	infections such as colds and flu

•	irritants such as dust, cigarette smoke, fumes

•	chemicals found in the workplace – this is called occupational asthma

•	allergies to pollen, medicines, animals, house dust mite or certain foods

•	exercise – especially in cold, dry air

•	emotions – laughing or crying very hard can trigger symptoms, as can stress

•	Bronchoconstriction

•	Inflammation

•	Dietary changes

•	Occupational exposure

•	Strong emotional expression (including crying or laughing hard) and stress.

•	A condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease that causes heartburn and can worsen asthma symptoms, especially at night.

Symptoms of Asthma

•	Coughing is the most common asthma symptom. Coughing associated with asthma generally worsens at night and early in the morning, making sleeping difficult.

•	Rapid breathing is a common asthma symptom. When breathlessness occurs, you may try to breathe faster to try to get air in and out of your lungs.

•	Peak flow numbers may be in the caution or danger range

•	Neck area and between or below the ribs moves inward with breathing.

•	Walking causes shortness of breath.

•	Gray or bluish tint to skin, beginning around the mouth.

Treatment

•	Controllers, also called “preventers,” reduce inflammation in the airways. Controllers should be taken every day. You will know that the controller medication is working because you will, over time, have fewer and fewer symptoms. When your asthma is totally controlled and you have no symptoms, do not stop taking them.

•	Generally, dairy products are not good for asthmatics. They’re too mucus-forming. We have heard, though, that cheddar cheese might be an exception. It contains “tyramine,” an ingredient that seems to help open up the breathing passages.

•	Turmeric is valuable in asthma. The patient should be given a teaspoon of turmeric powder with a glass of milk, two or three times daily. It acts best when taken on an empty stomach.

With more than 15 million asthmatics in the USA, finding the most effective and right asthma remedy for someone who lives daily with the effects of asthma is like a Crusader finding the Holy Grail.

Are You Finding The Right Thing?

The most important and prevalent thing on the mind of an asthma sufferer is finding a remedy for the ailment. Finding the right asthma remedy for you is not as easy as just going to the doctor and taking what he gives you unfortunately an asthma remedy is not that simple.

The proper way to remedy asthma is much more involved and multifaceted than that. It takes more than just pill popping to solve the problem of asthma; it takes an adjustment of one’s lifestyle. These easy 5 steps are designed to give you a direction and a guide to finding an asthma remedy that works for you.

Step 1: Respect Your Asthma

Are you respecting your body? Many people who have asthma refuse to respect it enough to alter their lifestyle which is dangerous and irresponsible. If you have asthma, accept that you have it and that you will have to make adjustments because of it.

Step 2: Be Consistent

Once you have decided on what to do and what not to do in an effort to control the symptoms of asthma, stick to those decisions. If you decide to stop swimming, don’t join the swim team. If you need to give up running, don’t register for a marathon. Be consistent and stick to the decisions that you have made.

Step 3: Be Practical and Positive

Just because you have asthma does not mean that you have to give up all activity and sit on the couch for the rest of your life. Keep a good attitude and you will be able to rationally think about the situation and what is the best way to handle it. Getting irritable and irrational will only compound your problems.

Step 4: Get Help

Never try to find an appropriate asthma remedy on your own. Finding the right asthma remedy is best done with the help of a licensed professional. Uncle so-and-so or cousin this-and-that may be great people, but they are not asthma experts. Ask someone who is an expert to help you make the right decisions.

Step 5: Be Accepting

Accept the fact that you have asthma, that you can’t get rid of asthma, that you can manage asthma, and that you can be happy and normal with asthma. Don’t let the asthma blow itself out of proportion. Accepting the fact that you have asthma will help you be able to find the best asthma remedy.

These steps are a simple way to combat the effects of asthma. There is an asthma remedy that is right for you, all you have to do is follow these steps and find it.

Even though you may know the 5 easy steps designed to give you an asthma remedy. With all the information available of no use, action is power when applying knowledge which will then free yourself the agony of having asthma again. You should never add to, or alter any component of your current asthma treatment without first consulting your physician.

However, many asthmatics sometimes tend to forget that even though there may be many strategies and technqiues around to asthma remedy around in order to have an asthma free life. The most important and prevalent thing on the mind of an asthma sufferer is finding a remedy for the ailment. Finding how to cure asthma fast that you truly deserve is not as easy as just going to the doctor and taking what he gives you unfortunately an asthma remedy is not that simple.
Once you have decided on what to do and what not to do in an effort to control the symptoms of asthma, stick to those decisions. If you decide to stop swimming, don’t join the swimming team.

Asthma is an illness where irritants cause inflammation of the bronchial tubes, as they become very sensitive, and thus making it difficult to breath. Contraction of the muscles around the wind pipe can be a result of this inflammation. The inflammation can also cause excessive mucus in the air passage as well as swelling of the lining may occur if its an airway inflammation.

Asthma is a growing worldwide problem. Asthma is classified in various ways. Traditionally, doctors have categorised asthma into two general groups, Extrinsic (allergic) asthma and Intrinsic (non-allergic) asthma, depending upon the types of stimuli that flare up these attacks.

Extrinsic (allergic) Asthma:

More prevalent in the younger age group, extrinsic asthma is caused by the immune systems response to inhaled allergens such as pollen, animal dander or dust mite particles. People with allergic asthma frequently have other allergy-related problems such as hay fever, rhinitis, skin rashes, eczema.

Intrinsic Asthma:

An intrinsic asthma usually follows a serious respiratory infection to which no external allergen can be associated. An intrinsic asthma condition may worsen due to emotional stress, changes in temperature or humidity, fatigue, irritants, exposure to fumes and gases etc. some people may be patients of intrinsic as well as extrinsic asthma.

Nocturnal Asthma

This term is often used to describe people who have asthma symptoms at night. Disturbed sleep from asthma symptoms is very common. In fact, people can suffer very severe symptoms in the night and have no apparent symptoms in the day. This is one of the hallmarks of asthma. Symptoms at night should never be ignored and are usually a sign that asthma is not well controlled.

Cardiac Asthma

This term is now rarely used and is completely different to the asthma we are concerned with here. Cardiac asthma has the same symptoms but these are caused by heart failure and not change in the lungs which is the bronchial asthma we are concerned with here. The treatments for this cardiac asthma are completely different.

Here are a few types of asthma triggers and ways to manage them, as recommended by the Consumer Federation of America:

1)Secondhand smoke. Tobacco smoke, whether exhaled by a smoker or emitted from the end of a burning tobacco product, irritates air passageways.

To keep secondhand smoke from triggering an asthma attack, asthmatics should politely ask friends and guests in their home to refrain from smoking.

Parents with asthmatic children should prohibit smoking in their homes and automobiles.

2)Dust mites. These microscopic animals are in every home. They survive on skin flakes and usually live in mattresses, pillows, carpets, upholstered furniture, bedcovers, clothes, stuffed toys and other fabric-covered items.

To keep dust mites at bay, wash sheets, bedcovers and blankets at least once a week in hot water; cover mattresses and pillows in dust-proof covers and maintain low indoor humidity.

3)Pets. To keep pets around and avoid asthma problems, pets should be kept out of bedrooms and any other areas where people sleep. They should also be kept away from fabric-covered surfaces, which can collect hair.

Asthma attacks all age groups but often starts in childhood. It is a disease characterized by recurrent attacks of breathlessness and wheezing, which vary in severity and frequency from person to person. In an individual, they may occur from hour to hour and day to day.

Asthma causes

It is not clear exactly what makes the airways of people with asthma inflamed in the first place. Your inflamed airways may be due to a combination of things

Asthma is most likely to be caused by a convergence of factors that can include genes (probably several) and various environmental and biologic triggers (e.g., infections, dietary patterns, hormonal changes in women, and allergens).

Asthma occurs when the body’s natural system of defense against bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microbes becomes overprotective. It misidentifies relatively harmless pollens, dust, and dander, setting up a reaction that narrows and inflames small airways in the lungs. From that comes breathlessness, wheezing, tissue damage, and, in the worst cases, death.

.

Asthma symptoms

People with asthma experience symptoms when the airways tighten, inflame, or fill with mucus. Common symptoms of asthma include:

•	Coughing, especially at night

•	Wheezing

•	Shortness of breath

•	Chest tightness, pain, or pressure

Asthma treatment

There are several types of medications available for treating asthma. Most people use a combination of long-term control medications and quick relief medications. Your doctor can help you decide which option is best for you based on your age and the severity of your symptoms.

In the last few years, there have been a large variety of asthma medications that Pediatricians and parents can use as an asthma treatment for kids with asthma.

To keep your asthma well-controlled and to prevent asthma attacks, it’s very important to take your asthma medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Taking your medication regularly means you can avoid asthma emergencies.

Many people think they can skip their medications when they don’t feel sick- that’s not true. Asthma is a chronic disease, which means you have it all the time, even when you don’t feel symptoms. That’s why taking your medication as prescribed is so important.

Asthma remedies

If you are experiencing symptoms of asthma, it’s important to see your doctor to be properly diagnosed. Although alternative therapies haven’t been shown to be as promising for asthma as they have for other conditions, here are eight of the more popular alternative remedies for asthma.

Home Remedies for asthma :- Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12 are very important nutrients to treat asthma decreasing the inflammation in the lungs.

Honey (shahad) : Honey is one of the most effective home remedies for asthma. It is said that if a jug of honey is held under the nose of the asthmatic patient and he inhales the air that comes into contact with honey, he starts breathing easier and deeper. The effect lasts for about an hour or so. Honey usually brings relief, whether the air flowing over it is inhaled or whether it is eaten or taken either in milk or water. It thins out accumulated mucus and helps its elimination from the respiratory passage.

Pregnancy is an exciting time in a woman’s life. Changes in your body may be matched by changes in your emotions. You don’t know what to expect from day to day. You may feel tired, uncomfortable, or cranky one day and energetic, healthy, and happy the next. The last thing you need is an asthma attack.
Asthma is one of the most common medical conditions in the US and other developed countries. If you have asthma, you know what it means to have an exacerbation (attack). You may wheeze, cough, or have difficulty breathing. Remember that the fetus (developing baby) in your uterus (womb) depends on the air you breathe for its oxygen. When you have an asthma attack, the fetus may not get enough oxygen. This can put the fetus in great danger.
Symptoms of asthma during pregnancy are the same as those of asthma at any other time. However, each woman with asthma responds differently to pregnancy. You may have milder symptoms or more severe symptoms, or your symptoms may be pretty much what they are when you aren’t pregnant.
In general, asthma triggers are the same during pregnancy as at any other time. Like the situation with asthma symptoms, during pregnancy sensitivity to triggers may be increased, decreased, or stay about the same. These differences are attributed to changes in hormones during pregnancy.
Common triggers of asthma attacks include respiratory infections such as a cold, flu, bronchitis, and sinusitis: Both bacterial and viral infections can trigger an asthma attack, cigarette smoke (firsthand or secondhand), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or regurgitation of stomach contents up the esophagus or “food pipe” , smoke from cooking or wood fires, emotional upset, food allergies, allergic rhinitis (hay fever or seasonal allergies).
Changes in weather, especially cold, dry air, exercise, strong smells, sprays, perfumes, allergic reactions to certain chemicals, allergic reaction to cosmetics, soaps, shampoos, Allergic reaction to irritants, such as dust/dust mites, molds, feathers, pet dander, etc. also trigger asthma attack.
If you took medication for your asthma before you became pregnant, especially if your asthma was well controlled, you may be tempted to stop taking your medication out of fear that it might harm the fetus. That would be a mistake without the advice of your health care provider. The risk to the fetus from most asthma medications is tiny compared to the risk from a severe asthma attack.
Moreover, women with asthma that is uncontrolled are more likely to have complications during pregnancy. Their babies are more likely to be born preterm (premature), to be small or underweight at birth, and to require longer hospitalization after birth. The more severe the asthma, the greater the risk to the fetus. In rare cases, the fetus can even die from oxygen deprivation.
How pregnancy may affect your asthma is unpredictable. About one third of women with asthma experience improvement while they are pregnant, about one third get worse, and the other third stay about the same. The milder your asthma was before pregnancy, and the better it is controlled during pregnancy, the better your chances of having few or no asthma symptoms during pregnancy.
If asthma control deteriorates during pregnancy, the symptoms tend to be at their worst during weeks 24-36 (months 6-8). Most women experience the same level of asthmatic symptoms in all their pregnancies. It is rare to have an asthma attack during delivery (10%). In most cases, symptoms return to “normal” within 3 months after delivery.
The important thing to remember is that your asthma can be controlled during pregnancy. If your asthma is controlled, you have just as much chance of a healthy, normal pregnancy and delivery as a woman who does not have asthma.
The best way to treat asthma is to avoid having an attack in the first place. Avoid exposure to your asthma triggers. This might improve your symptoms and reduce the amount of medication you have to take.
If you smoke, quit. Smoking can harm you and your fetus. Avoid being around others who are smoking; secondhand smoke can trigger an asthma attack. Secondhand smoke also can cause asthma and other health problems in your children.
If you have symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux (for example, heartburn), avoid eating large meals or lying down after eating. Stay away from people who have a cold, the flu, or other infection. Avoid things you are allergic to. Remove contaminants and irritants from your home. Also, avoid your known personal triggers (cat dander, exercise, whatever sets you off).
Asthma medications usually are taken in the same stepwise sequence you would take them in before pregnancy. During pregnancy, inhaled corticosteroids are the mainstay for long-term control. Long-term medications are sometimes combined into single preparations, such as an inhaled steroid and a long-acting beta-agonist.
Rescue medications are taken only when symptoms appear. Inhaled short-acting beta-agonists are usually the first choice for fast relief of symptoms.
If possible, avoid regular use of epinephrine and other related medication (alpha-adrenergics) as they may pose a higher risk to the fetus. Epinephrine may be given as an injection to treat a severe asthma attack or a life-threatening allergic response. If this situation occurs, treating your reaction effectively and quickly is important to decrease the risk of oxygen deprivation to the fetus.
Aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): These medications are used to relieve headaches, muscle pain, inflammation, and fever. They are not recommended during late-term pregnancy.
If medications are needed to control GERD (heartburn), avoid regular use of antacids that contain bicarbonate and magnesium.
